I installed a delco 10si alt on a 74 bronco but not sure if it is wired right. Anyone do this? any diagrams if you have? still need the voltage regulator? My fuel gauge reads full all the time. Is that the problem?
If you used a 10si you will not need the external regulator thats on the ford because that type alternator has it built in.The easiest way to do this conversion is to use a 10si with a self exciting regulator (also refered to as a one wire hookup)(part#7127se).Also if there is a rebuild shop in your area take you alterntor to them and they should be able to convert it to the one wire for you.this type of alternator turns itself on and off automatically. All you have to do to hook it up is run one wire from the output post on the alternator and hook it up directly to the positive on the battery. To work right the wire must have battery voltage on it at all times. This is by far the easiest way to make this change over. Also once completed this system is far superior (and easier to maintain)than the original system that came out on the bronco.
If you are trying to use the current wiring on the bronco it will lead to other problems. The reason you gauge is reading wide open is because it was not designed to handle charge current. It was designed to use the field current (about 1-5 amps)that goes to the original regulator.
If you will cannot find a shop to do the conversion for you pm me your address and I will drop a regulator in hte mail for you.If you are handy with hands tools the change is real easy to do.
If you still want to use the 10si that you have I will work you up a diagram and send it to you.
