SS HPX from ITP, need help

I just got my SS HPX, what will I need to do to install it. Will I need to add oil to the system or will it not leak out that much. How snug do I need to tighten it, will I need to use any Teflon tape?

I installed mine with no special tools or added oil. remove the two plugs from th eheads, one per side. Clean the area in th ehead from any sealer and old o ring part. I then added the fittings to th ehead and made sure to wet the o ring with oil first then just used a deep well socket to tighten the fittings in. I then placed xover tube on loosely at each end the tightened them down and put my parts back on then nstarted it and checked for oil leaks and had none. It was pretty straight forward and painless.

I would not use tape or anything else on those fittings. When I installed my crossover line, no oil spilled out. I snugged mine down pretty tight.

A word of caution: keep an eye out for leaks. After one year on the truck, I was returning from deer hunting, when I got home I discovered oil all over the backend of my truck. One side of the HPX hose started to fail at the fitting. I was glad it didn't blow completely; the truck would've shut down immediately at that point. Best of Success! V/r Les

I snugged mine down "pretty good", but ended up with a leak there as well. 3000psi oil shooting by the O-ring tore it up in short order. I snugged it down after replacing the O-ring tighter that time, and it's been good for over a year now. I didn't get a torque value for you, but I had to put more on it than I expected. I know that's all vague, but hope it helps.

I couldn't find the torque spec for an HPO rail plug but did find it for the ICP. Since it is in an HPO plug port that would be what I would start with. ICP torque spec is 22 lb/ft. In this chart it is called "Oil Injection Pressure Sensor". If it leaks tighten it slightly. The nut that holds the SS tube to the JIC fitting boss just needs to be real snug. Better to be on the loose side to start then to over tighten to begin with.

22 lb/ft is kinda loss but I will try it and if it starts leaking I can tighten it.

Fittings with o-rings don't seem to need the torque we think. You can easily damage the o-ring by over torqueing. Like mentioned before lube the new o-rings.

Yeah, that does sound low. I'm quite sure I put a lot more than that on mine, even before it leaked...

I do agree with you Joe. It doesn't sound like enough torque. The ICP is subjected to he same pressure though. I can't find a torque spec for the HPO line fittings at the head. If I could find that in the worhshop manual then I could compare it to the spec for the ICP. I wonder if there is a misprint. The 29 NM converts to 22 lb/ft so that would be a misprint as well.

Wink

Use red locktite, the removable type and ou will have no problems provided you snug them down nicely.

It is a feel. Torque that sucker down on that oring to where you feel it has compressed it tightly without squeezing it, or risk blowing out the oring like Joe described. Too loose can be bad because you can destroy the oring. Too tight is really hard to achieve unless you have a poor feel for these things. Snug it down good without cranking on it.

You will know when you are cranking on it because it goes from a good snug feel to a cranking one. Once it begins to snug, keep turning until it feels different. Done. IOW, I used no TQ wrench.

I also used the red loctite on my HPXover bosses.

Dont ever use teflon tape on the oil system, if a small peice comes off, it could clog the tiny oil passages in an injector.
