The chrome sticker on my grill was never installed properly when it was new. The sticker is wrinkled above the passenger headlight trim and the top right corner of the center grill section. It is now about to start flaking off. I pulled back a small piece and can see that the grill plastic is a dull white color.
Has anyone completly removed the chrome grill sticker and simply painted the grill? If so, was the sticker difficult to remove?
The chrome is plated on and won't come off except where it is peeling. Check salvage yards for XL grill or you can buy a new black plastic one from LMC or NPD and paint it.
I was a bit confused about what piece exactly you are asking about...the headlight door or the grill itself. In either case, both are available aftermarket through Certifit or Keystone Automotive in chrome and are relatively inexpensive. I have had a Certifit grill in mine for about a year and a half and it has held up very well (better than the used headlight door I bought that is now wrinkling above the passenger's side headlight as I believe yours is). I will be ordering a new one one of these days (probably after winter) from Certifit. If you really would prefer to paint the pieces, they are also available in XL trim (kinda a charcoal gray) that would be easily paintable too.
Go to the hardware store and buy some Muriatic acid (in the pool chemical area) soak the part. The acid won't eat the plastic but will eat the chrome. Easier than sanding.
never heard of that trick, I will have to try it. I have an LX but I have a chrome grill that looks horrible.
Found that one on another site while researching what to do with the chrome mirrors and window trim on my 95. My dad always has a bottle of it in the shop, works great for cleaning rust out of parts too. Better than CLR.
