First off I would like to say hi to everyone. This is my first truck forum. I have a 87 F-250 with 258,000 miles on the old ticker. At work everyone like to talk chevy this dodge that, and try to pick on the old ford. Today I hooked up to a 98 dodge 1500, and a 2000 chevy extended cab in tug-a-war. no one could pull no one. From what I believe the dodge weighed 4,500 and the chevy 5,500 to my 4,087 or so, and could not move it. So my question is I need something thats not going to cost an arm and a leg for pos. trac. or something what would you guys recommend for me. Thank for any info. I will be posting pic. of the pull off.
With a ford its actually called a limited slip rear end.
I would check out a junkyard, and try to find a rear end with limited slip and do a swap. If your trucks a 4x4 you might need the front diff too if the gears are different.
Might be able to mini spool it, not sure if ya can with a bigger rear end or not.
Just my opinion, but your nuts using a 250k mile truck to do a tug with, honestly think anyone no matter what the truck is/how old is nuts for trashing a truck for this, but anyway... Increase the weight in your bed to gain some extra traction and as preppy mentioned, a limited slip rear end from a junker.
A good thing to try is holding on the brakes until the other guy starts spinning out, then slowly start going for it (don't just floor it, you'll lose traction too), once they lose traction and spin, you should have them. Good luck and hope that tranny and drive-shaft holds up.
Yeah, I know I should'nt be playing with her, but when a bunch of guys are already thrashing her and fords in general the adrenaline gets going I had to stand of for the old ford!!! I'm not going to make a habit of this, but if I could do something simply to pull the dodge or chevy one time boy they would NEVER hear the end of it. I know you have to understand where I'm coming from. An old ford with 258,000 miles on her just pulled your new dodge of chevy. I mean thats pricless As far as the truck for now she ran, sound, and handled like she always has.
When we would go I tried holding my brakes for that extra sec. and could'nt hold them they would pull me. And I'm thinking I've already have the limited slip. As far as the weight they would'nt let me do that, I do have duel tanks and I did have them to the max.
A junkyard limited slip is going to be worn out. I wouldn't even waste your money with it.
If you're just going to try to pull other truck around the parking lot, then I have to question how smart this is. It's very hard on your truck, for one. A limited slip also isn't going to get you the traction you need. They simply aren't strong enough for that kind of abuse. If you really want to do this, you need to look at a detroit locker. They are the strongest lockers made.
Of course, the smart thing to do would be to just leave it alone.
All these trucks weigh about 5000lbs give or take, so the one with the lowest gear ratio and best traction wins in a tug-o-war. This is a great way to break driveline parts however so it's not the wisest thing to be doing. Tell these guys to come back in 22 years when thier trucks would be the same age as yours, chances are these new rides will be long gone to the crusher at that point.
in my opinion tug-o-wars prove nothing but who has better traction and who is the better driver...if you want to prove to someone that yours is better by tug-o-war you gotta match the tires size tread and pressure match the weight on the rear axle and the overall weight and even then...id just go find a truck pull contest with a big *** sled and see who goes further...and please dont tell me you hooked the trucks up with chains
Hey thank for all the comments. Around here (southwest va.) we don't really have places to go for pull sleds or anything that I know of, so we just make do. Even the roads I use to fourwheel on they now have a gate, trespassing or etc. Anyways, I have proved that these newer dodge and chevy's truck just can't out do an old ford with 250,000+ miles and I loved every min. of it. As for the lockers I'm still interested in some I'm now looking at the detroit locker (Ford ez-locker) whats your alls opinion on this one. And no we did'nt hook up with chains, it was a huge toe-strap. I now have the videos, but I can't seem to get them off of the quick time player. If you guys would like to see them let me know how to go about posting them and I will or I'll just e-mail the to ya.
I've seen this before, hook the trucks together and see who can break something first. I think doing that in the mud would be much more safe and not so brutal on the equipment.
