Question removal-fill plug for transmission

Im having trouble getting the fill plug out of the side of my 5 speed manual tranny. I looks like it has some kind of a slot in the middle of it but I can't get it to turn. Am i not holding my mouth right or what? I can't figure out what i need to do to turn this thing. I don't want to pull the shifter so any help would be greatly appriciated. Thanks for your help

It's been a while, but I thought the fill plug had a square hole in it that you could stick a breaker bar / ratchet in to loosen it up. I'm 99% sure that's how I did mine.

It's really a 5 speed with a granny gear. Even Ford labels the shift **** that way. 6-speed just sounds better in the marketing literature.

It's really a six speed. Does the granny gear not count for some reason? It's another gear. Maybe overdrive shouldn't count, either. Maybe they should call it a direct drive one speed, with granny low, two underdrives (first and second) and an overdrive.

The fill plug is a square head. I forget if it is a 3/8" or 1/2".

You are right of course, but the granny gear is useless unless you're pulling a heavy load. Then it becomes the best invention since sliced bread. I guess the reason we consider it a 5 speed with granny, is because you would think that starting out (even when empty) should be done in gear #1.

Of course if I had my preferences, this would have been an 8 speed. I would add one more gear between the 2-3 (what you would call 3-4) ratio, and tighten up the 4-5 (5-6) ratio, plus add another gear on top, but for some reason no one asked me when they designed these trannys.
