i just bought a 87 f150 4x4 4.9 engine 3 spd auto trans. don't know what model trans on door it says trans K . from park shifting into reverse trans will back up with no hesitation. but from park to drive it takes from 2-3 seconds for it to go into gear where you can feel it. but there is no slip or anything after that this is when it is first started. bad pump ? or don't worry about it.
second if i put my foot into it it won't shift unless i let off the gas then it will shift. does the trans have a vacuum modulator ? could there be a vacuum leak? if i drive normal old man style it shifts fine.
A 3 speed auto should be a C6. It probably has a vacuum modulator which requires a vac. source off the manifold. Usually it results in hard shifts w/o the modulator hooked up.
Failing to move when dropped into gear, and not shifting are probably the beginnings of trouble. Fluid ok, at right level? Some have talked about a govenor or regulator that might affect this, but I'm not a trans man.
Do you know a trusted shop? Caught early, this may be simple and cheap.
thanks my back has been giving me hell havent been able to get under the truck but trans fluid id pretty darn dirty in it.
a friend said he is pretty sure that's caused by a dirty filter in the trans taking up the time first getting fluid up in trans valve body from the pan ?? hope it is only dirty fluid no way can i buy a trans for it.
