Today I looked at an 87 f250 with the 6.9 idi and I believe c6 trans.(only guessing since I was told a 3 speed) but I was told that if you start it up it won't move right away if you put it in drive but what's its moving it shifts like a dream but if you park it and wait about 20 mins it will do it again. What would cause this. I know if I knew what trans was in it it would be a whole lot more helpful but I do not have much knowledge on these diesels
it could be a bad first gear clutch pack, or a bad seal in the front pump.
either way the trans is going to come out and get refreshed.
and depending on how many miles are on it, it may need a new planetary housing also.
the last one i had done cost $600 to replace the planetary housing, all the clutch packs, pumps, and torque converter.
Buzzy- if you do have a C6, drop it down one gear to position #2, this will then start off in second gear. This, I think, should bypass the first gear clutches. If no change, you are loosing hyd pressure, and it will need to come out.
the EXACT same thing happened to mine. worked perfectly except that it took like 60 seconds of revving to get it to move in drive (reverse worked fine instantly). i never did figure it out. i assumed it had to do with the trans fluid warming up. sold the trans as-is for $50 and did my ZF5 swap.
Well we took it for a drive to day. A lot or white blue smoke smelt like oil when we first took off but it does sit a lot and it took off fine slipped a lot when we first took off the shifted OK and a little hard and better from 2nd to 3rd. The more we drove it the better it felt really firm shifts too but a little slip right before engagement. So this could be the cause of more things?
