Try cleaning up the engine harness connectors. There should be 4 main connex. Sometimes they can corrode and cause poor, no connex. Mucho headaches when it happens.
I have got that 172 code stored in the memory, with no check engine light and no ill effects to performance or mileage. my CEL is functioning correctly how come the code is still there?
Replaced the fuel filter. Took truck for a ride. CEL came back on(would miss it if it wasn't there). Ran the code. Not only did 172 come up again but nowcode 157 MAF low voltage is showing up.
Have you checked the FPR? My guess is either that or, as Conanski said, a fuel pump that's at fault.

Did you clear the code when you fixed the problem?

So now you have a lead. Code 172 doesn't really tell you anything it just says the motor is running lean. Code 157 is pointing at a specific sensor that is not behaving correctly and could cause your problem. Test it if possible or replace.
A dirty MAF sensor is likely to cause a lean condition, so clean the tiny heating elements with a shot of electric contact cleaner and see if it makes a difference.
Replaced the MAF sensor. Erased code. Took it for a ride , Wouldn't you know it CEL came back on with code 172. Might just let the mechanic get the headache.
Go back to the beginning of your problem and check the connection of your cables - reclean and retighten.
You may want to check for correct voltage at MAF and/or computer. Some one else would have to tell you exactly where and what votage to expect since yoiu have a new system than what I have on my '92.
