Every once in awhile when i go to start my truck it will make the sound similar to the one where people turn the key when the truck is already running and it makes that whining and grinding noise. I think that there are a couple of teeth missing on the flywheel causing the starter not to grab and make that noise. The starter is also brand new from napa. I am wondering whether you guys think that it is my flywheel or could there be something else wrong and if possible what needs to be done to fix it? I am worried that if its the flywheel it will come to the point where it will keep making the noise and wont start one day. Should I be worried?
To check the teeth on the fly wheel you can remove the inspection plate and look at it, bump the engine and insect the other half. Have you checked the connections on the starter itself, wires, bolts etc?
Everything with the started has a good connection. I haven't had the time to pull off the inspection plate. But I will do that as soon as I get back to my parents house when i can do it in the pole barn.
Does anyone know the work involved in pulling the trans to get to be able to remove the flywheel. I know that I am more than capable of doing the job and I really rather not pay a dealer or someone else to do it.
I find myself wondering if this started after you changed out the starter, or if this was the reason for changing out the starter thinking you may fix the issue?
I started hearing this sound so I changed out the factory starter with one from napa and that starter began messing up because it must have had a short since it would draw my batteries down to where they would almost be dead every time I went to start my truck. I took that starter back and this one works fine other than that noise is still there making me think that its the flywheel.
Ok. I remember back from when I changed my starter, you can actually see the flywheel (as Jim mentioned). You may be able to peek in there and notice any missing teeth.

I would imagine about 4 1/2 hrs to R&R trans a shop charged me $400
