Has anyone here had any experience with the lights in the steering wheel for the Cruise Control? My lights on the right work fine, but there is no light for the On/Off switch on the left. The factory manual tells me how to remove the air bag, but doesn't mention replacing the lights. I have a 2001 Ranger 4WD with manual transmission and 3.0 V6.
I have the same problem except my on/off lights work and the right side is out,I did the same thing you did looked everywhere in the factory manual and could not find even a tidbit of info concerning those lights and how to replace them. (1998 4x4 ranger supercab). Maybe someone out there can help us.
I believe you need new buttons to fix the lights. When I bought my 1995 Ranger it did not have cruise on it. I bought a used colume with tilt and the cruise buttons on it and a factory cruise kit from Ford. The dealer tried to save time by using the buttons on the tilt wheel and they were dead. He ended up using the buttons from the kit and they lit up. Onece the air bag is out I think the buttons are just held in place with couple screws and un plug them.
I checked at my local Ford dealer and they said that you had to change the switch and it was something like $88. They said that the light can no longer be ordered seperately. I can't see spending that kind of money for just a light. I did find some info on another site on changing just the bulb and will give an update on whether I can get the bulb and whether it works or not.
Not sure which site you wre looking at but if you do a google for"Cruise control bulbs", you will find a nice pictorial on how to access those bulbs ,also at the end of the thread one fella chimes in and said he found that a ford contour clock bulb is almost identical to the rangers cruise bulb, the part # is E5RY-13466-BA. Let us know if you find out anything.
I bought the E5RY-13466-BA at my local Ford dealer. The bulb was a little longer but the same size around, so the little green condom that covers the bulb fit pretty well. It didn't come all the way down on the bulb which left part uncovered and makes that side a little brighter than the other, but is something I can live with. The only way to take the rubber cover off that I could see was to pry it off which broke one off one of the tabs that holds the circuit board to the base. The other one is intact and after putting everything back it seems to stay in place. All in all it went pretty well.
