I checked the fuses, replaced the transfer case motor. I had the motor off by still connected and when selecting 4h the arm does not move. 2H and 4L will though. When you select 4H all it does is you hear click click click click click in the dash area. Light does not come on. Here is what else I did
<o> </o>
I got a new switch from Autozone. They only had one switch available. The new switched hooked up fine to the wiring but did not fit in the plastic case. There was a small nipple that did not match up to the factory one. There is a small hole that it sits in. Either way I also noticed the new selector switch had 4 settings. When i moved it over one it did the same thing just clicking in the dash click, click, click, when I move it again the 4x4 light comes on. No LOW though. One more turn now the LOW sign come one.

I kept it in the 3rd position for a while to see if the low light would come on but it did not. I went below and the half shat was in deed locked.

At this point I was sure it was the switch and went to the dealer and got the right switch ordered.

Got it today, back to square one. the new switch does the same thing the old factory one did. Click click click click when in 4H, this switch fit perfectly and only has 3 settings.

Any thoughts what to check next? At this point to me seems like not enouph voltage but why would the 4 position switch selector engage 4x4 high and not the 3?

This is on my 97 F150xlt 4x4 automatic with the electronic shift selector.

Ok to add to this, I noticed the transfer case has yellow/white numbers written on it and my buddy seems to think it's been replaced because the gasket looks pretty new or in realy good shape. So here is my question.

Would a transfer case from a Expedition work on our trucks along with the F150 GEM?

Would a Expedition GEM work in the F150? I'm trying to see if either of them perhaps were switched with eather model and that's why the 3 position on the 4 position switch worked.

I would suspect the GEM then because it's seems like its sending power just not the right voltage.

Thoughts? Since 2H and 4L engage now and 4H whith the other switch, I wouldn't suspect the GEM being bad, but could be since I'm having power window issue right now as well.

Thanks,
Andy

just since it's a new vehicle I would say it wouldn't fit. 2 different kinds of vehicles. FoMoCo might have used the same transfer case.

I had the same problem with my 1997 ESOF. Turns out it was the (sealed) limit switches inside the electric shift motor were faulty. Installed new motor and now it does everything it is suposed to do. BUT the front axles were not engaging. The vacuum motor was not moving so I sprayed WD-40 on it and moved it by hand several times to free it up, then I sprayed some grease on it and everything works fine now.
