Welcome to FTE
The VIN is located in (at least) two places.
One is on the Warranty Plate, which is located on the left door face below the latch.
The other is either stamped on the top of the right (passenger) side frame rail just in front of the cab. Or...on the left (drivers) side frame rail adjacent to the steering gear box.
On several occasions, I've seen the VIN stamped on the engine mount crossmember, directly under the harmonic balancer.
Any of these stamps will prolly be hard to see, because of 39 years of rust and road grime.
And, it's possible the VIN on the Warranty Plate will not match the VIN on the title.
Ppl swapped left doors due to accidents, and forgot to swap over the original Warranty Plate.
1967/72: There were at least 6 different outside mirrors types available from Ford.
Some mirrors you see today on trucks of this vintage (1967/72) aren't original, and have been installed from later models, or bought from JC Whitney or Western Auto.
The mirrors i need are the three point kind, the ones that attach at the top of the door and twice below the window. at least, thats what the guy had on there before the moron who worked for him knocked them both off. Is there a way that i can figure out what the original equipment was?
and on the vin issue....how can i make sure that im not getting *****ed? or do i even need to worry about that?

If you'd like to see what this type of (West Coast aka Western) mirrors look like, you don't have to go very far.

Pictured in post #1 is a very nice 1971 with these exact Ford factory mirrors.
I gave you the VIN locations, you can contact the DMV in your state, give them the VIN, ask them to do a title search.
I saw the post with the 71, but i havent been able to locate them online. thinking about going with a different style tho. any idea of what salvage yards or stores i could contact?

Take it from me...no dealer or obsolete parts seller has the mirrors new.
I've searched for them for others...no one has any.

There is a second similar factory mirror,it only attaches at two of the 3 spots that the mirror Bill was describing does,it rides much closer to the body, and it doesnt use the brace that mounts with 2 bolts on the front edge of the door. Without the 3rd arm brace, when "morons" hit something, these mirrors tend to just fold inward or breakaway, rather than tear sheetmetal..... I believe the 3 pointers are called west coast mirrors, and the 2 pointers are Jr. west coast mirrors, there are photos of both in here,somewhere....
just be happy you dont live in florida. down here all new registrations involve a vin verification. the old lady at the front desk actually comes out and looks at your vin and compares it to the title. i told her its on the door, and that wasnt good enough for her, she made me crawl under the truck and read it off to her. it was so greasy i couldnt even read it so i tried to memorize in my head and got it wrong haha! she got spooked and sent me to the state patrol! haha so i went down to the state patrol and they were able to resolve the issue. a fun day that was.
