Help! My mother has a power-stroke 7.3, F-250, Diesel 2001. She has owened this truck since it rolled off the lot. The truck has just under 95,000 miles on it. We put the Banks Ottomind chip in the truck over 60,000 miles ago and never had any problems untill recentaly. The truck set a code: P0603, somthing about KAM (keep alive momory). Her truck seems to die and every now and then, and it also will lose power for a second then it will pick back up. most of the time when it dies on her it will start right back up, but it has been known to take up to ten minutes before it will start again.
I have had a couple people tell me the computer is going bad and need replaced, but others say that i will spend alot of money for nothing. I need help, im lost on what is going on with the truck and cant afford to have it down for to much longer. if anyone can help with some advice i would appriciate it. Thank you.
The 603 code is nothing to worry about it is caused by having a chip on it. As for the dying and loss of power that is classic CPS (Cam Positioning Sensor) issues. Has she recieved the recall from ford? Or do you know if it has been replaced before? Let us know And welcome to FTE!
Thank you for the welcome. As for the cam position sensor it has been replaced twice. and i had heard that the code i got from it was because of the chip, but the thing that throwes every one off is we have had the chip in for 60,000 miles and its never set it before.
Have you tried pulling the chip then clearing the p0603 code. Then checking for codes again. The reason I ask is that p0603 is a common code on chipped trucks. Some chips will cause this code (nothing to be worried about) also unhooking the batteries will cause this code. As far as the truck dying, it sounds to me like a cam position sensor(which is currently under recall)
Hope this helps.
The reason I asked is the new one that ford is using on the recall is grey. It's an updated cps, but it has been known to cause problems on some trucks. I would take it to the dealer for the recall and see if that helps(hey it's free). BTW Welcome to FTE
I was taught a long time ago that the sensors on the 7.3 should come direct from Ford or International. Skip the Autozones, Pep Boys and NAPA. They are selling Trash China Parts.
