Ford CPS recall, Bout time !!

Found this recall this morning. The article states that not all vehicles will be effected, wonder why that is ?

TO: All U.S. Ford and Lincoln Mercury Dealers
SUBJECT: Safety Recall 07S57:
Certain 1997 - 2003 F-Super Duty, Excursion, and E-Series Vehicles
Equipped with 7.3L Diesel Engines
Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor Inspection / Replacement
AFFECTED VEHICLES
Vehicle Line Model Years Assembly Plant Production Dates
Econoline 1997-2003 Lorain Assembly Plant 4/3/1996 - 9/16/2003
Excursion 2000-2003 Kentucky Truck Plant 3/25/1999 - 11/1/2002
F650/750 Series 2000-2003 Cuautitlan Assembly Plant 1/20/1999 - 10/31/2002
F-Series 1997 Kentucky Truck Plant 6/18/1996 - 12/17/1997
F-Series 1997 Cuautitlan Assembly Plant 6/11/1996 - 12/10/1997
F-Series 1999-2003 Kentucky Truck Plant 9/3/1997 - 11/4/2002
F-Series 1999-2003 Cuautitlan Assembly Plant 10/2/1998 - 7/21/2003
Affected vehicles are identified in OASIS. In addition, for a list of vehicles assigned to your dealership,
visit
https://web.fsavinlists.dealerconnection.com. This information will be available on December 04,
2007.
REASON FOR THIS SAFETY RECALL
In some of the affected vehicles, the Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor may fail due to circuit
degradation. If the CMP Sensor should fail, the engine may stall. In the event of an engine stall, a
crash could result without warning. A new CMP Sensor with improved reliability is now available.
SERVICE ACTION
Dealers are to inspect the CMP Sensor to verify which design level sensor is installed in the affected
vehicles, and replace all prior level sensors. This service must be performed on affected vehicles at no
charge to the vehicle owner.
OWNER NOTIFICATION MAILING SCHEDULE
Parts to repair this condition are currently not available in sufficient quantities to service all of the
affected vehicles. Therefore, to ensure that an ample supply of parts is available, owners of affected
vehicles will be notified in separate phase mailings over several months. Phase mailing will begin the
week of December 17, 2007; prioritized by age of vehicle. Dealers should repair any affected vehicles
that arrive at their dealerships, whether or not the customer has received a letter.

great find! alot of PSD owners will be happy to read this. I have replaced the CPS twice, which is unbelievable. One vehicle should never have to have 3 sensors in a 200,000 mile time span

The key there is thier inspection. They are betting on the fact that most people have already replaced them with the newer versions. Who knows!!!

i was thinking about putting the $25 one in my glove box in, but now i won't have to. However, i replaced it soon after I got the truck. I am gonna ask if I can keep the old one if/when they replace it.

So does mine.... but here's MY question now.

I replaced my CPS several months ago with the new gray unit. The one I took out was not giving me a problem, so I have kept it in the glove box as a "verified good spare". Since I still have it, I wonder if they (Dealership) will simply swap it out for a new "good" one, assuming that it tests out as the unit that is covered by the recall.

I guess I can call one of the local dealers and talk to the parts guy without giving them either my VIN or name and just pose the question to them and see what they say. I sure hope I don't have to re-install it just to go get it checked, bacuse I honestly don't know if it is the trucks original CPS or not since I bought the truck with 114K miles on the clock.

I'm going to call them.... and I'll post their answer shortly so anyone else who sees this and is in my situation will know what to plan for.

Funny, mine qualifies, yet the CPS in my truck is original. Been through two motor builds and now has 360,000 miles on it.

Lucky me!

Safe to assume I will not be able to get my refund of $690 when the dealership ripped me off when replacing mine!!! Sure wish I would have been around this site prior to bending over for them....

Pete, please let us know what they tell you. I am sure this is going to vary stealer to stealer, but it will be nice for reference. Thanks in advance!

For the 10 minutes it takes, I'm going to put the original black CPS in that I carry as a spare and let the dealership swap it out. My gray one will stay in the console. The problem will be getting off my duff and scheduling an appointment.

I am somewhat reluctant because the last time I had the truck into the dealer for re-programming of a new VSM two years ago, she was so traumatized by the experience, it took 3 weeks before she started running strong again.

EDIT: Since I get about 40 visits a day on my CPS R&R webpage , I have updated it to reflect this new information. It seems as if quite a few Powerstrokers are still having CPS problems if my little site gets that many hits just for the CPS. Do you think that the dealership would tell someone at the parts counter that is buying a new CPS that they are on recall???

Got my answer.

In order for the dealer tov erify the CPS sensor "version" to see if it qualifies for replacement, it DOES have to be installed in the vehicle at the time of inspection.

Oh well, I guess it's worth the potential for getting another $25 CPS to change my original one back into the engine and take it in for this offical determination/replacement. Actually, it will be really good, because the one that is running now can become my "verified good" spare in the glove box. Yeah!

If there is a record of them changing it and you paying for it....you never know....the new recall could be the kicker to get something back. Contact Ford Owner services...see if they can't set something up for you in advance so you don't have to argue it with the dealer.

Yeah all those guys that had the original go bad and replaced it with either a blue one from international or got the new version put in are basically out of luck. I have 125,000 miles on my original cps and my truck is on the list so will be letting them replace it soon.

If I had to take a guess Ford knew last year when they released the cheaper cps they were going to do this but figured give a lot of people the chance to do it themselves and save labor costs too.

I seriously doubt they'll let you keep it. Since the recall states a possible liability issue, I'm sure they want as many of those things back as they can. Doesn't hurt to ask, I guess.

On another note, I wonder what they'd say if I brought mine in with all these mods (after yanking the DP, of course!!).
