As far as your truck goes I think you should be seeing some black smoke as I assume you have no turbo. My 6.9L definitely smokes but I think the IP's been farted with so I don't know for sure.
Remember black smoke is fuel that was not burned completely, to much fuel for the amount of air in the cylinder.
So the more you see, the more fuel you did not get all the power out of.
If I put the pedal on the floor, I can blow plenty.
But with today's fuel prices unless I really need power, the throttle don't go to the floor very often.
Even when using lighter throttle applications, if the black gets dark the throttle comes up some.
