Ok, iam a Gas Mech. i Know alot about diesels, but i can always use a little help, ok i have a 89 7.3 idi, and when its cold start, it blows alot of white smoke for like 5-8 mins, i know white smoke is air in fuel, its not oil. Ok heres where i need help, i have had fuel line problems since i got this beast, always leaking somewhere, fuel heater, Injector Return Coupling O-Rings, etc... Its not leaking anymore fuel, that i can see, But it still blows white smoke, i pyrometered the IP Screw, and turned up 2 flats- 3 and it blew tons of Black Smoke, it was cool for awhile , but horrible gas Mileage, so i turned back down to stock and just a 1/16 of a turn up, just a smidgen. that has nothing to do with the white smoke, but, i just wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions. I might of been a ASE Mech, for gas. But i dont care if your a Master Diesel Mech. Multiple heads are better than one, Any Ideas Yalls!!!!!!
What is the temps where you are at.
Does it do it in the summertime too, or is this just a winter time thing.
If it cleans up in warmer temps, it may be normal, If it doesn't and cleans up after the block gets up to temp, your injectors are flowing more fuel than it can burn with a cold block, likely dribbling a little.
Its the Rocky Mountains, CO, at 9,000ft it gets 20 at night, i have it plugged in all night, and i beleive it did it in the summer, just not as bad as this, I dunno it doesnt affect the performance, just bothersome ya know, any more suggestions yalls...
It sounds like an over fueling problem to me. It may be the injectors are old and weak; popping off at a lower pressure effectively retarding the timing by injecting fuel prematurely. Are your glow plugs cycling correctly?
If you bump the throttle up to 1100 RPM, does the white smoke go away? When I start my truck under about 75F, it will shoot off a little smoke but if I wait a few seconds for the oil pressure to come up and give it about 1100 RPM, the smoke goes away. Keep in mind I don't have a high idle solenoid.
Either way, 5 minutes is waay too long to have white smoke after starting the engine. I can't really help you a lot because you messed with the IP and it could be either an over fueling problem or a timing problem/injector age problem.
At 30F and under, my truck will start and smoke a little more than say 60F but once I increase RPMs, the smoke goes away quickly as the cylinders heat up.
Edit: I'll try to make a video but I need my phone cable and it is in MA right now until someone sends it back.
mine did this with the old original '93 injectors.a little white smoke at start is normal for a few mins until she warms up.but if it smells really rich, your injectors may be in the same shape mine where lol.when i pulled 'em,they looked like 17/18 yr old injectors. much quicker starts with a set of fresh "BB guns" lol. no longer have a large cloud of white smoke, and don't feel like coughing my lungs up when loading tools while she warms up anymore.
Yea, iam almost certain its the Injectors, i believe there the original ones, i need to replace them anyway, and it does go away if i idle it up more, and when i messed with the IP, i did it right, pyrometered, it had the entire pump off engine on Table, and timed it perfectly, I think i just need new injectors, there old and time to go, Thanks everyone, you helped a ASE Gas Mech, with a Diesel Problem Thanks Guys.
