I think I just used a generic 2-jaw puller. I recollect the pump shaft is internally threaded, so you put a bolt and washer on the shaft and tighten to press on the pulley. I think I did that on the truck, with the belt on the pulley so the shaft didn't spin.
Overall, pretty easy job. Use a long breaker bar on the belt tensioner... makes it easy to move the tensioner with one hand and get the belt on or off with the other.
While you're at it, check your vacuum pump. It's next to the power steering pump. If the vacuum pump goes, so does your brake assist. Mine cracked between the pulley bearing and the pump body. I recollect it was pretty cheap and replacement is easy, so it may be worth your while to replace it while you're doing the power steering pump.
i meant that the tool uses the double nut theory to keep it from spinning off, it locks against itself so you dont have to have the belt on to keep anything from spinning
Yeah, I saw that picture in the post the "miss" had about her vacum pump. I'm sure that's the correct tool to use but I'm kinda one of those get it done with what you got guys. Theres a autozone five miles from me and they rent a three jaw puller for $30.
Using the jaw puller a brobly will need the belt on to hold the pulley in place.
It takes an incredible amount of force to remove that pulley. I would think a 3 jaw puller would just bend the pulley and destroy it. For 30 bucks you should be able to purchase the proper tool.
