Is there some secret to removing a power steering pump pulley. Mine is on a 79 f-150 2wd 460 it has an allen head bolt in the center. I have tried everything to get that bolt to break loose. It absolutely wont budge. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I already tried a search and found nothing.
You never willl get that bolt loose.. The pulley is a press fit over the pump shaft. The part that you were trying to break loose is the pump shaft. You will notice that on the pulley, around the center, there is a ridge. That is what you hook your power streering pulley puller up to. Then you put your allen wrench in the hole, and use it to hold everything from spinning while you wrench the puller off. In other words, yes you need a special puller. Your local parts house may have one to sell or rent you. They are not that uncommon.
Yes, you need the special puller. It's impossible to do without the puller. You will collapse the pulley. With the puller it takes approx 30 seconds to remove the pulley. When you reinstall the pully, make sure the ridge in the center is facing out. If you install the pulley backwards, A: the pulley won't line up to the rest of the pulleys, and B: You'll never be able to remove the pulley to fix the alignment problem.
