I could do that in my younger days (getting our and twisting hubs), but with my back and hips in the shape they are in, twisting that **** on the dash is much easier.
Leaving them locked cost a lot of fuel, not mentioning the added wear and tear.
Wear and tear is minimal, and I never even notice the difference in mileage. Of course, with the V10, I don't get "mileage" per-se anyway ... more like "gallons per mile" in the winter
