Something interesting just happened. So everything is still off so i figured id move it then put it all back on. Normally it takes about 8 pumps and lots of feathering ot get it going. But without everything on there it took 1 pump and started right up. Very supriseing, i guess that filter is starving the motor for air. So anyways i put it all back to gether but thats a good thing i figured out lol. It will run better when properly maintained. The previous owner didnt do so hot of a job.
the filter is what people were telling you to replace, everyone was just saying the air filter housing only needs a good cleaning, you can replace the filter for $4 at AutoZone.
and in my experience, 30seconds without an air filter isn't going to kill your engine. People seriously don't time and tune their trucks with air filters on them, do they? Idle mixture, idle speeds, timing, etc?
I wouldn't drive it around, but in a relatively controlled enviroment where you know there's not going to be a lot of dust or anything falling into/being sucked into the engine, there shouldn't be any issue.
No NO i know the filter is getting replaced, i just thought it was funny that it gave me such bad fits then ran like that after the air cleaner was off. Anyways should half a new air filter on buy next weekend so no worries. Thanks again for all the help.
also, that kind of rust looks like water has been sitting inside the air filter housing, I wonder how much the truck had sat with the hood open and if the inside of the intake or intake ports on the heads look like that at all.
