I have never in all my life seen this. I decided to check out some things while i had time. I go to take the air cleaner off the carb and its stuck on. So i tug at it and i see this. Rust not only in the air cleaner but on it and more then likely starving the engine for air. Ive never seen a air cleaner rusted out so this is a new one on me. What are the possible problems in leaving the air cleaner off the carb until i can get a new air filter for it.
Ben. buy the way here are some pics of the truck top pic is the air cleaner and the mess.
Never leave your driveway without an air filter...the things you can't see are what do a lot of damage. There's no reason you can't use that air cleaner. Just because the finish is rusted up, doesn't mean you can't just install a new air filter in it and be good to go. Rust being on the sides of the metal doesn't "starve the engine for air." You are creating a problem that does not exist. Clean out any metal flakes, put it back on, install a new air filter (available at any parts store) and you're good to go.
NO it needs a new filter the air filter is clogged with rust. I never have seen anything like this, it wasnt dirty it was caked with rust. I dont have even a few bucks for a new filter and the only driveing im doing is moveing it around the parking lot to keep it from getting a ticket.
I would wire brush and scrub most of the rust out, paint it-brush or spray bomb, and get a new filter, reinstall and done=money.
However, you could "tap" the filter, lightly bang it on pavement or concrete-flatly on the edges-as long as the surface isn't too dirty. Tapping or banging the filter will dislodge larger chunks, provided you don't damage it beyond use-don't mishape it. If you have access to an airsource, blow it out from the inside out-blow dirt away.
That aside, take the filter, and put it on your head, and look at the sun, inside to out-through the filter(seriously, hehe) If you see light of any kind, the filter should be ok for use-especially moving short distances.
I know its kida silly and im not 19 anymore but until i can get a new filter eliment wouldnt fliping the top of the cleaner help get more air into the carb until i can replace the filter.
If I'm reading your post correctly, you're asking if it's okay to drive without an air filter until you can afford one? No offense meant at all man, but if you can't afford an air filter, a 30 year old pickup is not for you. Owning any vehicle is expensive but a 30 year old one is even more expensive. This is one of those "I know I shouldn't do this but how long can I get away with it" questions that I hesitate to answer. You shouldn't drive a truck without an air filter. However, I turned my truck around in my driveway so I could back into the garage, without an air filter once and it didn't seem to do anything. But in general, the real advice I'm trying to give you is that if this is really your situation, you need to reevaluate how essential the truck is to you.

You can flip the cover of the air filter to make it like an open element set-up. make sure you have a good seal between the lid and your filter. Do what Thunderjet4X4 said to clean the existing filter as much as possible until you can get a new one.
If you are 'just movin' it around the parking lot' as you say, then just leave the filter out and put the cover back on ...........just don't go to cruiz'n w/o 1 in there.......I agree with the other guys tho', if you can't even afford a air filter, you don't need a classic vehicle, as most anything that breaks, cracks or whatever is gonna cost at least as much $$$$$ if not more.......maybe you should have sumthin' more inexpensive for parts mate
I know i was curious for just moving it around where i have it parked if i could do that with out the cleaner on but now ive got my answer. Thanks all for your help
