I think they are called Chinese fingers and KD tools made a set, I don’t have a boat so I know little about flatheads but the old style rear main seal was a fiber wick kind of crap that the fingers pulled through and then trimmed (somewhat of a crap shoot), I think if the new seal type (if available for your engine) is a stiff rubber molded two piece seal that you can slide around the crank with the main bearings caps loosened.
The tool looks a lot like the chinese fingers. You still need to get the crank dropped down some to get it in there, and honestly IMO it's a crapshoot if the new rope will end up any better than the old, once it's been though all that. Replacing just the lower half will frequently be enough to stem the flow. The only other alternative is to do it with the crank out, a whole different ballgame...
If the engine sat for a long time unused, the crank will drop down as the oil in the bearings and rope squeezes out and flatten the lower rope. The uppers get worn but just doesn't seem as bad. My engine was rebuilt in the '60's and saw only ocassional use after that. The rear seal was letting a fair amount of oil past, enough that after a drive it would drip a good puddle. I replaced the lower only and now it is very tolerable, just a drop or two. I used the white TFE rope that comes in the FelPro kits.
Your mileage may vary! Any chance you'll be pulling the engine for something else? It's a lot easier with the crank out. You really need to pack it in there before cutting the ends. That's why I don't think the chinese fingers are that great.
You get 4 pieces of rope, 2 graphite, 2 TFE. NAPA and I think even AutoZone can order the kit:
OS31242--Oil pan gasket (both pieces) front and rear rope seal-- $15.59 (correct for an 8BA/8RT)
I called my local Napa and Autozones and they were clueless on the kit. They said there is no such thing. I gave them the part # you gave me. Is there another shop that would have them or an on-line site? Thanks!
