OK I'm finally ready to upgrade to a 6.0 trans cooler in my '01 F250 4x4. My question is??? Are all of the 6.0L transmission coolers the same size? (33 tubes?) Which one do I need to buy from my friendly Ford dealer or wherever? I want to replace the cooler before I upgrade the tranny...
I bought one from Wabash Work Truck Center (Powerstrokeshop.com). They have three stock sizes for the 6.0. I bought the biggest, I think it is a 33 tube. The part # is 5C3Z 7A095 B, description 51002 oil cooler, and I paid $298.94 plus shipping. It bolted right in, no drilling or fabricating required (I thought there may be some). I removed the upper radiator shroud and loosened the two angle brackets at the top to ease assembly (though I inserted the cooler from the bottom). The new cooler lined up with two holes already drilled on those angle brackets, and two holes in the lower support. Hope that helps.
After one million miles (2 trucks) I R&R stock trans. coolers with a junk yard 25 row 6.0 cooler. I have towed with this old used cooler and could not be happier. Installation was a direct bolt in with no modifications other than adapting the hoses. My tow temp. is less now than my temp were when running empty. Last trip over the Rockies I70, the temp never went over 150. Cost $50 plus fittings and line and fluid. go for it!!
I got my through FTEPartsguy (supporter). Ed hooked me right up and was an easy install.
but I do have a questions for the knowledged folk. after I got installed WORKS great, but now that its cold my temp never got over 100 deg and its only like 30 deg out. Montana gets way colder than that so is it bad for it to be too cold? should i be blocking it when on the hwy speeds? just curious if there will be any ill effects when its really cold?
Mine doesn't move much in the winter, maybe to 120 or so when cruising interstate for an hour or so. Haven't noticed anything bad about it. You could always put a little card board blocker making the cooler less effective. That would allow it to warm up some. I always though the blanket they make for the front would nice to have, screen when really buggy, and blanket when cold.
Yeah I know about the card board thing to help, but I was just curious if its bad to run it when the cooler is working really well even when the motor is warm, you know like the shifting or presures for example. you know like when you first start the truck and start driving on the hwy. I like to warm it up a little bit.
the good thing about the cardboard is when its below zero there is no worries about it getting wet, cause there is no wet at those temps. its the melting time that it falls apart. lol
