engine coolant leak

i was wondering if anyone knows what the problem could be. the truck is a 96 f-250 with the 7.3 diesel in it. the coolant is leaking out of a little slit at the bottom of a rounded thing that i'm not sure of what it is. it is located behind the oil pan while laying under the truck. does anyone have any suggestions on what the problem could be or how to fix it? Any and all info would be greatly appreciated.

I'm still not sure what you are talking about with your description. However, it sounds like you are describing the weep-hole on the bottom of the water pump. If this is the case, you pump is about shot.

Or, you could be talking about the oil cooler. IIRC, there is a water jacket in there? Maybe not on powerstrokes...

Can you be more descriptive as to where it is leaking from. There is only a handful of places coolant can leak from.

Is it in the center of the truck or on the drivers side? Is it by the belt and pullies? anything else that can help us get a better picture of where you are talking about?

well..it is just a guess that is where it is coming from.....freeze plugs are easy to install...but that one looks like its behind the bell housing so I would assume the trans would have to be dropped, along with the flywheel maybe.

I would do further inspection before going through all that though.pull the inspection cover and you might be able to see the plug.Check the back of the heads also as it may be coming from there

You don't have to pull the tranny to get to the freeze plugs. I believe it takes a 1/2" drive to wrench them out. They are on the side of the block.

You should be able to see the driverside, but the the starter will have to come off on the passenger side.

This would be an excellent time to do a coolant flush as well.

Thanks for clarifying.....I could not tell from the page.....just seen the dowels there(assuming they are they to line up the bell housing)....they looked higher on the block than the plugs so I thought it would be under the bell housing

IIRC you have a motor sitting there......do you have a pic of the back of it?

I could have some really good pics for as the truck is sitting above the pit for the last two months. However, I'm not a that location right now. Those freeze plugs are pretty easy to see. They are on the back 3/4 of the block on the sides.

I know someone has a picture of them on here.. I've seen em...

This presents a question though. Are freeze plugs know to "back out' and leak? Maybe we have a bigger problem here?

Next time you are there snap a few pics....if your tranny is out I would be more interested in pics of the back of the block and heads as I have never seen that side of the motor.

There's no inspection plate on the freeze plugs. IIRC there is a inspection plate for the flywheel.

I'm not sure.. I'm trying to picture it and about 5 different engine pop in my head.
