Time for my first mods

Looking for a little advice here, have gotten my first diesel, AND i love IT, a 95 F-250 SC, 5 speed, XLT, 7.3 Diesel, 155,000 miles excellent condition, know the truck well as it was my Dad's, it's been babied and very well maintained, he made the mistake of buying a new one and I bought his... I'm using it mainly for towing a 34 foot travel trailer, about 8500 pounds, the truck is stock except for an engine exhaust brake and a 100 gallon auxiliary fuel tank.

Have read on here that everyone says to do the intake and the exhaust for maximum benefit.. Am thinking of putting on a 4'' MBRP stainless exhaust system with a 5'' tip and an AFE Stage 2 intake.. Have a couple of grand here to play with and want the best bang for the buck... Am a little concerned about the effect of a bigger exhaust on my engine brake which works so well for towing...

Would appreciate some advice on what you guys think are the best ways to go for the mods...My mechanical skills are limited to changing oil and filters, figure the best thing to do is go to a diesel performance shop to get these mods put on.... yes/no?

Thanks..

the intake will be a piece of cake to put on, especially if you can do filters and stuff. I would recomend the 6637 filter mod, which uses a napa filter. (search for it) I wish i did that instead of buying an aftermarket one

If you do the exhaust, make sure you buy a kit with the 3 inch down pipe (goes on after turbo). this is gonna be a little more difficult to install, but not impossible. I have a MBRP and I like it. however I like the sound of the magnaflow on my buddy's 97 a bit better, but thats just my personal preference.

good luck and welcome to the forum!

Yea I agree with everything Icebox said, search 6637 for the intake setup. I bought an AFe kit before I knew about this site, and I payed an arm and leg for it compared to the 6637 and performance probably not any better on the AFe.
And exhaust, just make sure you get rid of the stock downpipe.
You said you got a couple grand to play with, I'd do a chip from Tony Wildman.

I also agree with what they said. I would recomend to get gauges, and then every thing else to gain power. Also shim your FPR, and in the mindtime you get the chip, make the ICP mod, AKA 10k mod.

and also welcome to the crew.

Thanks for the replies guys, I'll have to check into this 6637 intake deal, and will see about the downpipe for sure, not sure about all the other mods, I have no idea what a 10K mod is or a Tony Wildman chip, but I'm sure I'll learn, one mod at a time...Has anyone done an exhaust mod that has an engine brake? if so what is the effect on the brake?

Not sure on your question about brake with new exhaust but I wouldn't imagine that it will hurt it. The intake can be done cheap with the 6637 filter and some 4" exhaust pipe. Look in my sig, I have an AFE intake if you want to go that direction.

Gauges should definately be in the top 3 mods. Intake, exhaust, miniumn of a pyro. Then let the PMS start.... You'll definately change your driving habits once you see how the camper raises the egt's. Shimming the FPR is quick, cheap, and easy. HPX is only about $55 bucks, and a TW is well worth it.
Most of the mods can be done with minimal tools and experience as long as you pay attention to the guys on here. Don't be afraid to ask!

As an advice, you can use the SEARCH button to find out many things, I dont know if you can do that because your 6 posts, but try it an enjoy that, there are a lot post about 10K mod and TW chip. If not ask again please.

Thanks for all the great advice, I will check into the search feature, ordered my 6637 filter today. I'll look into doing the downpipe after that and will see from there where to go next...Looks like it will be fun.

Ya, the intake and exhaust are very important, especially if you tow alot. Gauges are very nice as well, so you know whats going on with your truck.
Tony wildman or DP tuner will write you Custom tunes. Dont buy any other tuner if you're taking my advice.
I would also look into an intercooler. that would help your EGT's.
Welcome to FTE.
to avoid confusion, i think i should clarify one other post- PMS= Powerstroke Modification Syndrome. you'll catch it fast. lol

I think I've already caught the PMS syndrome...I'm going to go with the Tony Wildman chip once I get the 6637 and the downpipe put in, what will an intercooler do for me, how expensive of a mod and how hard to do??

for 90% of us the intercooler will drop exhaust gas temps, a very important thing to do. for the other 10% that build 500 hp rigs... it boosts hp, but the avg truck we run here wont produce the power to notice hp gains. but the egt drop is well worth the investment
