I need to replace a resistor in a controller for a back massager but I'm not sure how to identify it. The resistor is about 3/8" long, about 1/8" in diameter and it's tan in color. The color rings on it are, gold-black-white-orange. I know those markings mean something but I don't know what. I can probably pick one up at Radio Shack but I'd like to know what to ask for. Any electronics gurus here that can help me out? Thanks!
The base color of the resistor is of no importance. From what you describe it sounds like a 1/4 watt resistor. The colored bands indicate a 39 ohm resistor with a tolerance of +/- 5%.
I build electronics components, but am no expert on this. Here is a link that I used for deciphering your info.
Bad Boys Rape Our Young Girls But Violet Goes Wild
Black Brown Red Orange Yellow Green Blue Violet Gray White
no 4th - 20%, silver - 10% Gold 5% tolerance
as pointed out 39 ohmages. Id use no less than 1 watt tho.
black and crispy indicated it got hot.
now why did it get hot? did the voltage presented climb because a regulator went south? without a schematic or serious ability to read a PCB, you are shooting in the dark...
I hate to discourage but so many things affect the components on a printed curcuit board such as a shorted diode, or higher than allowed load, even down to a micro proccesor gone south. I' am really not all that much when it comes to this stuff but I had a electronic controlled washer that was not very old when the curcuit board went out and was told this happened fairly often to these type's of machine.
After a failed attempt (lasted about a week) to repair the board I cross referenced the machine and found it also came out with manual controls to which I changed it out to. All I know for sure is that washer worked for a long time and still worked when I sold it.
I hope I did not come across saying you should wire your back massager different then intended, I was letting my brain spill out on the floor over some thing that really didn't have any thing to do with your problem.
All this to agree with what has been said about something else probably causing over load and burning of this resistor. Good luck hope it is still fairly simple and not costly.
yeah, unlikely that is it is the resistor. chances are that the voltage or amperage jumped in the system by either another resistor going out (normally the bad resistor looks fine, it just fries all the other ones by increasing their load) a diode allowing reverse current, capacitors, regulators, transducers...who knows :P need to see the system, but it is unlikely that a burnt resistor is the original problem (it will need to be replaced though)
If you just replace the resistor, it's likely that a new one will fry as well. Resistors seldom fail short, they fail open. So if it's cooked, something else pushed all that current through.

The way I learned it was almost the same:
Bad Black
Boys Brown
Rape Red
Our Orange
Young Yellow
Girls Green
But Blue
Violet Violent
Gives Grey
Willingly White
Get Gold
Some Silver
Now! No Color
Yes, we jarheads were socially repugnant, but we remembered our resistors, dang it!

Dragging up old memories, here.
My electronics teacher in High School was a retired Navy E-9.
His rendition was:
Bad = Black = 0
Boys = Brown = 1
Rape = Red = 2
Our = Orange = 3
Young = Yellow = 4
Girls = Green = 5
Behind = Blue = 6
Village = Violet = 7
Garden = Gray = 8
Walls = White = 9
Get = Gold = 5%
Some = Silver = 10%
Now = None = 20%
