help with engine i.d.!

I just picked up a 1975 f-100. Upon consulting my manual, it should have a 360 2v with a c-4. But, the engine has a 4 barrel holley with a cast 4barrel manifold. The intake casting is 9B7 C9ZE9425B. The block has the numbers 32 352 cast into it. Is this a 360 with a 4 barrel? The truck vin is F10YCW60283.

Hi,

From the VIN I can say that your truck had a 360 when it left the factory. That's what the "Y" means.

The intake is a 1969 intake, Febuary 7th, 1969 to be exact.

Since you have a 352 on the block you definately have an FE engine. You will need to measure the stroke to find out more.

Pull a plug and stick a piece of wire into the spark plug hole. Rotate the engine over by hand and measure the stroke by marking the wire.

3 1/2 inch stroke will be a 360, 3 3/4 inch will be a 390.

Good luck,
Lee

It's entirely possible that someone went out and plopped a 4-barrel intake and carb on that 360. I know that's the way my old 360 was before I upgraded to a 390. It's actually quite a common thing to do. Or someone could've swapped a 390 in there. Go measure the stroke.

Thanks Guys. I picked up the whole truck for $90. It has been in an underground storage lot for over 12 years(it is still not in very good shape), I figured that I can't go wrong for a parts truck!

Well, after measurement it appears to be a 390. 3.75" of stroke is what I measured. Is there any way tell what year it is? I am not too familiar with the FE's. Are there any years that are better to have? The 4 barrel intake is from 1969, maybe the engine is too???

Great a 390!

If you crawl under the truck and while laying on yer back look up at the engine where the oil filter is at. On the block in this location will be a pad with the date code on it. Post it here for a de-code.

As for the heads the date code can be found under the valve covers.

Take care,
Lee

Check the date code on the block. It's below the oil filter adapter mounting pad. On the heads the date code will be either next to the head casting number between the center two plugs or above that under the valve cover area between the valve springs. Date codes are a number/letter/number(s) sequence. The first number is year ending. Next the letter is the month. A-M skipping the letter I. A=Jan B=Feb and so on... don't forget to skip "I" Last number or numbers the casting date. Example: 2J20 would be 62/Sept/20th. 70's date code blocks will have two dots under the first number. The rest is the same. The head casting number between the center spark plugs will tell which model/engine they are from, cc's and valve size in stock trim.

And the chances you have a C4 behind that FE are pretty slim....

The code reads 6 C (maybe G?) 7. Which means this is a 1966? Sound right? Is there any difference between car and truck engines, or are they all the same? What years are better to have(higher compression etc) As for the C4, the decoder says that the truck was built with a 360 and C4. I will have to crawl under and check it out, I'll have to figure out the differences between the two to figure out what I have for sure.

I agree with Mike, I think these C4 references are for the FMX tranny. No C4s behind FEs in trucks.

Yep 6= 66, C would be March or G July, and 7th day of the month. Some car engines had a little more compression and maybe a different intake depending on year and model. G.

I just got the numbers on the heads from inbetween the center plugs. They read D7TEA4 there is also a circle with numbers reading 13579. Anyone know what this works out to?

So far, it seems that the block is a '66 with a '69 4v intake. The trans is also a C6(I checked the bolts today, it has 17) The reason I thought it was a C4 was because the vin plate has a tranny code of G, which according to my 1974 Ford service manual makes it a C4. Of course the motor is supposed to be a 360, and is now a 390 so who knows what has been changed.

First off, you have a c6 or fmx not a c4. As for the year of the motor, i wouldn't worry about it. You know you have a 390 and I would leave it at that. Ford missed matched so many parts and false advertising anyway.

True, I am just curious. That's just me. It is a C6 for sure.

Sure that's not a D2T or a D3T on the heads, these were halted in 1976 so a D7 casting is not right.

Just curious too, --Mike
