lo gear

hi everyone, I have a 79 f-150 4x4 that I'm building for a off-road only truck (rock crawling.) it's got 351m c6 205 w/ 3.50:1 gear running 35" tsl's. I don't know what my crawl ratio is with this stock set up, but I know I need to get to a lower gear ratio. What can I do to get this thang over the big stuff with out stressing the drive train so much and will. thank you

You can get yourself a 203 t-case and buy a doubler set-up. It uses the low range part of the 203. This will give you a 4:1 low range in the t-case. Or you can buy the Klune-V Extreme underdrive which goes between the t-case and tranny. It's expensive(about $1900) and comes with either 2.7:1 or 4:1 ratios. The problem with lower axle gears is the lower the gear ratio, the smaller the pinion gear, the weaker the gear set. You could swap in bigger axles (Dana 60's) and run lower gears in the axles as well. To find the crawl ratio, you multiply the trans first gear ratio (2.46)x t-case low range (1.96)x axle ratio (3.50) which is 16.87:1, not very good for rock crawling. These are just a few of your options. The first thing you should figure out is how much money are you willing to spend and go from there. Hope this helps.
