Just bought a HDTV from Best Buy. They are trying to push the "black tie" protection plan. Has anyone bought this service? Is it worth the $350.00 for the standard or the $700.00 for their top of the line plan?
Don't know if it was the black tie plan that I had, but I baought the protection plan from Best buy on a Digital video recorder.. The unit cost was $499 and the protection plan was $49.00..
Well I used the unit for 2 years burning many DVD's and when I brought in for service under the plan they said they would replace it rather than fix it.. They don't make that model anymore and paid me for the unit..
I expected a pro rated payment, but they gave me the full $499 back in store credit..
So in short the protection plan was well worth the money in my book...
When I get electronics, I usually do a little research to see if it has common problems or whatnot, and i go without the protection plan. The one time I did buy one, I never did need to use it!
At least the ones around my town do. I still cant believe the people that still use them for some stuff. I was behind a couple at my local BB who just bought a computer and they paid Geek Squad $75 to install a Norton security suite (geek squad recommended Norton), and they had to pay for the software on top of the installation.
thanks for the replys. We have a week or so to make up our minds. The TV we bought is a Samsung, which rated pretty good. Also, the reviews I read show no problems.
I bought a Samsung 50" DLP tv about 2 years ago. No problems but I did get an extended service plan that covered lamp bulb replacement. The bulbs and color wheel wear out after a few years.
I'd recommend it for DLP but LCD is almost bulletproof; plasma durability has greatly increased in the past couple of years too.
Did you use a credit card to make the purchase? A lot of card companies add a warranty to the manufacturers warranty. I personally would not add the warranty from Best Buy. I also personally would not buy a major product from Worst Buy.
Warranties are another profit tier for the seller. On average, they will make money from them...on average, the buyer will lose money. Same thing as Vegas...
You're better off not buying just-released products, doing research on reliability and avoiding problem-prone products. That doesn't mean you won't have repair issues, it just means on average you'll do better.
