Hey guys I was just curious how to use a compression guage. I need to check one cylinder out in my 460. Its missing an am trying to determine the problem. I need to be educated here on how to use it. I am not for sure if this is the right forum but i thought I would post it here to see. Hopefully somebody will reply with some info. Any tips or suggestion would be much appreciated. What should the lbs read for each cylinder. A quick response would really be helpful as i need to do this as quick as possible. If I have any other questions i will let you know. Thanks.
First, you never just check one cylinder (well I have but I checked the compression before and after every race, so if a plug looked bad I would check just one, but street motors are different). You need to compare the highest compression number to the lowest. A 15% difference between high and low is all that is acceptable. Now remove all plugs, lock the throttle Wide Open. Screw in compression gauge in and crank engine about 5 to 10 times, or until the the needle stops bouncing. Record number and then go through all the rest of the cylinder. Now check your numbers.
Thanks for the info. What do you race Bear if I might ask?
Used to race up until 1994. First I raced cars, Ford from my 1956 Crown Victoria thru my several 428CJs. The I switched over to boats, the 2 stroke kind.
