It could be. 1.08 is a 287 CFM carburetor. Assuming you get up to 3000 RPM in most of your driving, you should be looking for around 340 CFM. But that should not make it sputter. You've got your mind made up that the problem is the carburetor, but you need to consider the other things people are telling you. Did you check your timing yet? I skimmed through the thread since the last time I suggested it and I couldn't see anything saying you did. Your problem sounds like timing to me. Check the base timing, and check your vacuum advance for a vacuum leak. I can't seem to find a response of yours saying you did. If you don't check things step by step and follow our instructions, we are of no use to you. A lot of people make life harder on themselves because they think "I don't have a timing light, so timing probably isn't the problem anyway." That's the worse way to diagnose engine problems.

(Sorry if you already did, I just can't seem to find it in the thread).

No problem at all, just trying to cover all the bases. Here is a writeup I made a while back that goes over how to set your timing (ignore the first couple paragraphs about Carter carbs).
