I bought a 88 F150 4x4 with a Mustang 5.0L HO and its front brackets, and power steering pump installed in it. It drives kinda messed up feeling compared to my 94 F150 4x4, and 93 Lightning ( feel really tight, and responsive ). Could the Mustang PS pump be causing some of this? The tie-rods, and ball joints fell tight. I have repiared looseness in the steering shaft, and tightened the gear box adjustment up.
I checked autozone.com, and they do call for a different pump, but I just wanted someones elses thoughts before buying, and installing a new pump.
proballyneeds ball joints ujoints, they dont get loose they freeze. the mustang pump is still a ford c2 so it will work, it may have a different resivoir than the stang to truck
Hard to tell from your description but the power steering pump won't affect the steering feel unless it's just not working, all Ford vehicles of this vintage used the same pump mounted on different brackets. Siezed front drive axle U-joints will make the steering feel stiff and lumpy. The ball joints may be tight but I have driven several of these truck with dried out and siezed ball joints that prevented the steering from returning to center, this produced some spooky steering response. Of course wheel alignment will also affect the steering feel.
The pump works, just the steering is more floaty feeling than my other 2 trucks. The feeling is driving it in 2wd , so how would the axle u-joints make it feel different, as the hubs are unlocked? I have new tie-rods, and ball joints for it. I guess I will go ahead, and install them, and get the front aligned. Thanks for the ideas.
