firing order question

I bought a 88 f150 that was suppose to have a Mustang 5.0L in it. It does have all the front pulley set-up from the Mustang, but I noticed the firing order was regular truck order not the HO order. The truck idles, and run great now, but I thought I would swap it, and check to see if it would run better on the HO order. But, it did not at idle, I did not drive. I idled rough, and smelt rich.

Does the timing need to be checked, and set again after doing this? Or, is it that they might have installed a truck cam in the Mustang motor?

Thanks, Jon

I'm pretty sure it won't run on the HO order. Nik

It started, and ran both ways, but I did not drive.

if it's a HO motor it will only run right on the HO order. The 5.0 and 5.8 orders are diff, not sure of the 5.0 but the HO order is the same as the 5.8, which is 13726548

running and running right are two different things.

so it was running real good and you just thought to change the firing order to see if it would be better?

you lost me on this one.

Yeah, I was told it was an HO motor, but it wired as a regular 5.0L. I was mainly checking to make sure.

But, would you have to re-time it after the wiring change to make sure? Or, is the timing corect no matter what?

#1 position does not change and the distributor does not move, so no, the timing would not change by simply swapping the four of the wires around.

That is what I thought, but wanted to make sure. So, they must have changed cams in it, as it idles smoother wired regular 5.0. So much for the idea of going Mustang MAF on it without a cam change.

It's probably a regular car motor... it is pretty hard to tell what you're looking at if the obvious exterior things are missing. You could still put mass air on it though, you'll just have to re-arrange 4 injector wires that's all.

I read on fuelinjection.com that it will work that way, but not be right exactly. It has the Mustang front dress on it, alt, PS, and ac(that does not work, and missing parts)

They were idiots that put the truck together. They just threw parts on half way, and did not think things out.

As far as 5.0 and 5.8 firing orders go, don't the 5.0 truck motors use the 5.8 firing order after 94 or something like that? Which firing order do the 5.0 HO motors use?

That's only when using individual O2 sensors to feed L and R inputs on the computer, if a single O2 sensor is used to feed both inputs it's not a problem.

Thanks for the help.
