E4OD to 5-spd

Not exactly sure what 5-spd trans Ford used with heavy duty F250's. Reason why I ask is that I might need to rebuild my E4OD and it will cost roughly 2K. My truck is a 4x4 and have a BW 1356 transfer case. I am thinking about doing the swap but not really sure. I like having an automatic, sometimes I don't. So other than needing peddle's and probably a new adapter to go with the transfer case, what else do I need to do? My truck is a 95 with the 351W.

I just did this swap on an '90 F350 diesel 4x4. I needed drive shafts, tranny cross member, clutch pressure plate, clutch disk, flywheel, clutch hydraulics, clutch pedal and carrier assembly (the auto version isn't the same), cab floor plate for shifter ... I think that's it - oh, the ZF5-42 transmission itself. I did the whole thing in about three evenings and one full day of labor. Your swap will be a little different because you don't have an all mechanical diesel like me (does the gasser E4OD use the engine computer?). I won't gloss over it: this was not an easy or cheap swap but I like this truck and I can't stand driving an automatic so there you are.

Good luck!

PS - Depending on year, the five speeds offered in the F250 are the ZF5-42 and ZF5-47 (earlier vs later design), I believe both came in a close ratio and wide ratio verison. I have the close ratio in my diesel, the wide version has a deeper first gear. Beware - these units have an integral bell housing so you will have to get one for your specific engine or risk it not bolting up. I bought a rusted out truck for the donor for my swap and probably saved a pile.

Like said make sure you get the trans from a 300 or 351 as the 460 and diesel have their own bellhousing bolt patterns. You will also need a Clutch master and slave cylinder and the line in between.

No adapter between the tranny and transfer case. And don't worry about changing the e4ode computer out for a 5 spd computer.

The E4OD in my truck had been rebuilt at least once and was weak at best when I swapped it for the ZF. The truck only has about 135K on it. Honestly, for the cost and effort of pulling and rebuilding the E4OD twice, I think you could make the ZF swap.

If you really want to keep an automatic you should consider swapping in a c6 (no overdrive though) or going nuts and putting in an Allison unit.

Correction: Fix your E4OD right and beef it up if need be.

If I do the swap, I would need a donor truck to save me alot of time on finding parts. Don't get me wrong, I love the E4OD, I like the overdrive since I drive this thing on the highway without burning a bigger hole in my wallet.

Find a donor and look it over. Only you will be able to decide if you want to do all that under the truck, under the dash, under the hood work. If you want to pull the column so the old shifter doesn't sit there like it needs viagra or was the victim of a botched bris, do the floor pan, carpet & shifter right, etc. As for OD, the ZF will give you OD but I would expect no gain in mpg as the auto will shift faster and stay in a taller gear, offsetting the efficiency of the manual--ymmv, depends on your driving mix.

I did this on my F150. Here is a pic somebody sent me of all that is needed, I found this very helpful. I also had a donor truck which is the way to go if you can:
