I got my first one (00 V10) because I wanted a full size SUV and like the Ford brand, having owned a number of Ford trucks and other vehicles over the years.
I got my second one (below) because I liked the Ex and wanted a diesel version.
Mainly I wanted a SUV witha solid front axle from teh factory. I want a big lifted truck and was sick af the IFS of the bronco's and tahoe's and didnt wnat to pay for the solid axle swap and other upgrades and still ahev an older truck.
The strong axles, beefy T-Case, biggest SUV on the road next to the H1, V10/Diesel option, sinister looks in all black. It all added up to why I bought it.
I konw my Dad got his first X to hual our trailer around and because he wanted a Diesel. He was going to get a 01 F-350 CC LB but for some reason my mom talked him out of it and still to this day I am ticked about that but over all I like it and then we bought a 04 X because my mom tought it was going to replace the 01 but we still got both and I love both
I wanted a V10 for a while. My F150 was struggling w/ 3.55s and 34.5" tires. I actually have more need for a truck, but when I went shopping, excursions were a no-brainer. A loaded excursion with leather heated seats, running boards and V10 was 4-5 grand cheaper than an XLT supercab F250/F350, with similar miles. (I went shopping the day gas hit $4/gal. My bet paid off ) A similarly equipped truck would have been 10 grand more, for no reason. My only regret was that I didn't find one with 4.30s.
I found a 03 EXCURSION LIMITED V-10 4x4 with all options I think. Mine has the (standard 3:73 axel ratio). A 4:30 was also offered at extra cost. Also maybe at some point rear seat arm rests may have been offered (this I do not have) although I do have 4 captians seats and the 3rd row seat.
I thought about it over night and just went and bought it. I had never seen one before or driven one. After driving it I found that it just seemed to "FIT" my personality and overall 'wants'. I don't tow, pull, or haul, nor have I ever taken it off road. I just use it as a car, but I must admitt I enjoy looking down on top of cars at red lights, (I never realized how many people that don't wash the top of their cars).
I usually average about 12-14.5 miles per-gallon. Which is about as good as people who have a 3/4 ton Ford, Chevy or GMC truck.
Its actually been a good truck always cranks, runs and drives good. I have never found anything to compare it to except a Ford Super duty Crew Cab pick-up that is loaded with options.
The EXCURSION is just one of those weird vehicles that comes along about every 20 years that will do this and that if needed but very seldom needed for a specfic purpose. Its a Monster and hard to park in a big city that is designed for small cars. So I do a little extra walking in parking lots.
I usually always drive mine to Sunday School and Church on Sundays.
It is really a pleasure to drive but it seems to take constant attention when driving, I often find myself wandering a little on the Interstate and By-Passes which is my fault and not the X's. The X is big and does not fit in tight places. Also I might add the turning radius is huge.
The mighty X is over-built for most under-built for a few and has found its way into society without a specific need, this is where the lore begins. Excursions are accepted readily at Country Clubs, business meetings, construction sites and grocery stores. They are driven by both the young and the old. We all know or at least have an idea who drives a Rice Burner, but no idea who will be behind the leather wrapped wheel of the Excursion.
The above are things that I realized before purchaseing the X.
I have had lots of people express their opinions on the X, some have never seen one and are suprised at the options it has and how nice it is inside, others wondering how one can afford the gas, and why anyone would want it. I take this in stride because I actually drive it less than 10,000 miles a year, more like 8000 miles a year.
What is an EXCURSION---------Its a Vanity Vehicle first and foremost, its a towing vehicle, a vehicle to haul the kids, a cruiser, a statement of "look at me" and most of all just plain FUN TO DRIVE with no place to go!
The Excursion is primairly owned by adventerious people with a care-free outlook who enjoy life but who are serious about their over all goals in life. These people are doers and are satisfied with themselves and the mighty X. Time will pass, but the King of the SUV's will always be remembered.
Was looking for a daily driver to fit the family into, and wanted to upgrade into a 4x4 from the mini van, and came across the ford excursion.
Found this web site, did a whole lot of reading, and new what I was getting into as far as the vehicle was concerned. And now couldn't be happier. (besides having easier access to parts for mods)
I can play with it and have a lot of fun. My friends all want one, but they can't have one cause Santa gave it to me and there is only one allowed in each neighborhood. (Santa said so) I'm the only kid on the block that has one. And all the girls are too short to get in it, so it's just for me and the other guys I like. It's as cool as the motorcycle Santa gave me one year.
Now that I have the biggest SUV toy, I can do anything!!
The bowtie did not offer diesel (their loss) and a truck does not offer enough seat belts for my family. Wore out the previous truck towing at the max rating frequently.
I bought mine in November last year. I had 3 foster kids that came unexpectedly in March, and trying to get all of us around in my F-150 just wasn't working out so well. So I needed something that was roomy enough for us, and would still pull my TT. I could have gone to a big station wagon, but then I'm driving 2 vehicles to go camping. So I found the Ex on Autotrader, and bought it same day it was listed. I ran a Carfax (I'm 3rd owner) and after getting smarter (Thanks FTE) I got an Oasis. Both came back clean. I'm happy as hell with it, and no looking back. It's comfortable, solid, rides great, and pulls like a freight train!!
I have wanted a 4x4 diesel truck for years. When my wife and I decided to purchase and restore a 1973 31 foot Airstream travel trailer for camping vactions I decided an Excursion was our best chioce as a tow vehicle. When we began looking found a used 2002 Ltd with 7.3, 2 wheel drive and bought it. However I still wanted 4 wheel drive and when I saw the new loaded 05 on the dealer's lot just had to have it. The rest is history. Good Lord willing I will have my 05 for many many years. It has been a great tow vehicle and it tows the 8,000# International Airstream with no probelm at all. Still using the factory WD hitch from Airstream.
Question: My 05 has the towing package from Ford. Do I want/need any other additons to the suspension/truck that would improve the towing? It tows now with no swaying or any other issues. I guess I don't "need" anything but does anyone suggest any changes that would improve it? ...or..... if it ain't broke don't fix it!!
Thanks!

Funny. I was on ebay a week or so ago looking at Airstreams. Love the style. Maybe in a couple of years when the kids are old enough to appreciate road trips.
I have been racing motorcycles all over for twenty two years, in addition to teaching a racing/riding school. I used vans for years, but things got big enough several years ago with business that I got an auto hauler, then a Ford dually 7.3 PSD shuttle bus, used.
Bus ended up having mold in it...and I'm allergic. Ouch. I decided to sell off my school, but keep racing in addition to starting flat track next year with my two boys.
So, the bus needed to go away, but I wanted one vehicle that I could use for towing the trailer and then just general communting...and carrying all of my family and my mother and father in law at times would be cool for trips. It would replace my bus and my car.
So, for me, the Power Stroke Diesel was a no brainer immediately, then carrying more people puts me into the X. I got 4WD also for those just in case moments here in Wisconsin. Only had it for about two months, but, for me, it's just one of the nicest vehicles I have had. I really enjoy it.
