I have read thru several back threads involving fuel pumps and etc.. I am still unsure.
I have just over a 100K on mine and the other night I drove 35 miles on the highway and no problem. Stopped at that location for about a hour and when I drove home, the truck started to shudder a little and the farther I drove home (about 15 miles) the worse it got. I was only doing about 40 mph to minimize the effect. When I got in the neighborhood I could hear a noise.
When I got home, me and the lovely lady started hunting for it. Found the fuel pump to be making a buzzing sound (not high pitched), louder than what I have heard it make before. Probably X5 louder than normal.
I checked my DTC's and there are none. I do have a 100 gal Aux tank which gravity feeds to the factory tank thru where the filler tube was connected. It is vented to the top of the Aux tank.
1) I suspect the fuel pump needs replacing. Recommendations of manufactures, prices, install advice?
2) But I was wondering if it was cavitating? How can I get rid of the quick disconnect fittings (I looked for the "quick connect elimination" mod, but I may not be savy enough to find the thread)?
3) I hope I do not have to drop the tank, I only can do easy stuff. I am not interested in doing the Hutch or Harpoon mod, since I have the Aux tank. But if you guys really think the tank filter is shot, I have a good mechanic I use regularly.
4) Also, as a side bar, having the Aux tank gravity feed to my factory tank, do you think the extra head (pressure) from the Aux tank wrecking havoc with my return fuel regulator?
Probably seems long winded and needy for somehting this simple to most you guys, but I appreciate the info and input.
yep sounds like the pump ur aux tank shouldent have an effect on the pump. i just went through the same thing last weekend. the guys here were a blessing and have great advice and tips let me run through some stuff to check as they did with me... questions was it white smoking? sounding like it was choaking? ways to check if its ur pump open ur water fuel seperator valve drain till empty. then cycle key on with the valve open but dont start do this for 20 sec allowing the bowl to fill then again a seccond time this time u should have a nice steady stream comming out. if you do its not ur pump. if you dont a new pump from advance auto is bout 191$ i got an off brand for like 20 $ cheaper and it dident match up too good i took it back and got a bosch pump which is whats stock. for 20$ more its an exact fit... hope thats a fix let us know how it goes
oh and your pump sits on ur frame rail under ur driver seat. open ur tanks caps and the line from the tank to the pump, blow with an air hose from the pump back into the tank you may have an obstruction in that line.. may wanna try it first just to make shure..
bakerbuilttracks, was that the Master or the Carter that didn't fit up? It looks as though NAPA sells the carter under their name and it comes with a wrap to fill up the factory clamp. I also noticed they sell a motorcraft for $432, wonder why the big delta in costs.
um im not shure the diff in cost. the first one i got was a ayrotec or something rather. it had an adapter fitting for the inlet and was alot shorter than stock. it dident come with the clamp either. as well the connectors were flat instead of having long posts on em. i took the stock one out and looked on the pump and it said bosch so thats what i got.. it came with the clamp and was already wired with a connector on it. 3 bolts plugged in the lines and plugged it in to the eletric connector and walla. the bosch was 191 and some change perfect fit no hassel and for 20$ more than the other it was worth it. thats what i would reccomend..
The mod to remove the quick connects is the pre-pump mod. ITP sells a kit that removes the quick connects and the mixing valve in the fuel tank (which can let in air below 1/4 tank). ITP 7.3L Fuel Tank / Pre-Pump Kit I bought my kit from a different supporter, but cant remember who anymore.
thats a trick i an't herd yet trevor thanks i will check on doing it my self thats happend to me park on a hill i did with a 1/4 tank haha air is not fun
Oh, and you can get that kit without the filter. Mine included a small inline filter that plumbs in between the suction side of the pump and the hard line that comes from the tank. Its a NAPA 3002 and is clear, so you can see whats getting sucked up from the tank.
Sorry fo rthe hijack, but wasnt it mentioned once to move the pump further back in the system, closer to the tank, to hel keep air out. I aslo believe something was once mentioned about a prepump, but that may have been in the tank..
Usually when a fuel pump makes a lot of noise like that it means that it is starving for fuel volume.
You need to remove the sender from the tank and clear out the screen in the mixing chamber.
