I am wanting to put a fi 300-6 from a 90's econoline into my high-boy mated to a np-435. I dont know where to start or what I want to end up with other than a capable, dependable dd. There is so much info here and it is all over my head. Does any one recommend a book or thread that breaks it down for dummies?
What year is the truck? A 300 is a good candidate for this because the block is essentially the same from the EFI trucks of the 90's all the way to the carbed trucks of the 60's. So issues like motor mounts are a little easier to handle. However, it's not an easy accomplishment by any means. You'll need the complete wiring harness out of the van, and you'll have to convert your fuel system to an electric high pressure version with a return line. There are also added issues with the transmission, depending on what is in the van and what is in your truck. It's much simpler if both transmissions are standards.
I don't know of a book to help you, but typically if you ask this question in the forum for the year truck this is going into, you might run into someone who has done this before. I know a few people have tackled this in the 73-79 board for those year trucks, so maybe it has been tackled in the other boards as well. If your only end goal is a reliable and capable daily driver, a carbed 300 is still a great candidate. Typically people do this swap for gas mileage or added power rather than reliability. Fuel injection is great because it is relatively problem-free for great lengths of time, but when something does go wrong, the repair is much more in-depth. I prefer carburetors, because while they do require more maintanence and attention, there's not much that can't be fixed with the flat-blade screwdriver I keep in my glovebox.
Best of luck with whatever you end up doing; I'll be excited to hear what you come up with.
