So whats up with checking tranny fluid? Seems it always reads hi. When I add some it takes forever to check because the fluid is all over the stick. What a pain. I've never seen this on any other car.
With the pan off and the dip stick installed you can see the angle/tilt of the end of the dip stick. When the dip stick is fully installed it has a wet mark on the stick at a 30 degree angle. Only go with the higher mark and not the lower mark. If you don't you will over-service the tranny.
The over-servicing will cause the tranny to foam out the extra fluid and onto the exhaust.
There is also a vent hose shaped like a candy can top installed onto the metal vent port 12 O'clock position. Make sure it is facing reward. If it is facing forward the air will force itself into the venturi and cause a false overfill event by mixing with the surrounding fluid and push outward with the same symptoms as adding too much fluid.
always ALWAYS allow the transmission to be warmed up. The norm is 10 minutes or 10 miles to get an exact reading. If you choose not to drive then allow the van to warm up-shift it through its gears a series of 3 or 4 gradual times in a 10 minute span to allow complete integration of the fluid thru all of its passages. The filler tube will have residual hanging on it so wipe the dip stick until you feel confident you have a new clean look. Your match mark area-the fluid should be inside of it.
