Can anyone tell me roughly how much it would cost to convert my 95 F250 PSD 5 speed regular cab, LWB 2 wheel drive to 4 wheel drive? I mean, it doesnt have to be a monster rock-crawler or anything, just something to go muddin in. Or at least so I don't get stuck in my yard anymore(3 times in the past 6 months). I know nothing about it, except for what I read in Dan McDonals's tech article. What are all of the parts I would need? Ive got access to just about any tools necessary. Also, where is a good place to buy axles? Are Dana's the best? What shoud I stay away from? Could I get a wrecked truck from a junkyard? If anyone could, it would be great to have step-by-step instructions, or at least an email addy for help. Any comments/suggestions welcome and appreciated.

It would probably be easier to sell your truck and buy a 4wd. It thats not an option here is a list of most of the things you will need off the top of my head. The 2wd have coils up front right.
Front axle-Dana Hd44 or 60
Front leaf springs with shackles off another 4wd close to same year
Shock mount towers also from truck close to the same year as yours
front driveshaft off of truck close to the same year
transfer case Bw### i dont know
rear drive shaft off of a 4wd single cab long bed
i think there might be a cross member that you will need
platic cover for the hole in the floor you have to make for the stick
a trac bar/panhard bar depending on how it rides with the new axle
Email is on profile if you have any more questions
i will be making a 2wd ranger into a 4wd with 302 pretty soon
Hope this helps

The dana 50s where ttb untill 99 when they became straight axles (AFAIK). All a dana 50 is, is a d60 housing with 44 internal. It will work but they might be kinda hard to find as will the d60. I didnt think of the 50 most swaps ive seen use 44s or 60s.

Your best bet would be to find a wrecked truck that you could get all the parts off of. You should find out if the front ends on the diesel's are more heavy duty then the gas engines. I would suggest Dana 60 just to be safe because the diesel is a very heavy engine. Good luck.
One of the few things that I do know is that the front end is more heavy duty on a diesel than gas. From what I keep hearing, just about everything on a diesel is more heavy duty and more $$$$.
I to have a 90 F250 7.3L Diesel 2WD 5 spd man transmition standard cab lwb. I have got stuck more times than I care to admit. I bought the truck With a blown up engine this summer. I rebuilt the engine from the ground up and I have about 5K miles on it now. It has become painfuly clear that I MUST have a 4wd. I am looking for a way to convert this truck to a 4wd. The truck is in excellent condition and trading it in for a 4wd is not an option. I to can use any help possiable.
First of all welcome to the site with more information than you can shake a stick at http://www.tarleton.edu/students/jwillms/smilies/1poke.gif . All the info listed above is a basic overview of what you will need, just closer to your year model. Another item i forgot to list is the tailshaft for the transmission that will bolt up to the transfercase
If you have any more questions you know where to ask.

Here is what i did when i wanted to do my conversion. I found a 4x4 of the same year and took a nap under it. Look what is similar and what is diferant. have your truck close by to compair. I know about the 150's and 100's....the 250 and up are not something that i really focused on. Price is something that cant be pined down. You can find a good deal anywhere....and get ripped anywhere. Just have to have lots of sources to compair. I got my stuff for free....junk truck that was just sitting out on the road....what are the odds? haha...anyway....just look and see....i am almost willing to bet that you will need an axle, new cross member, transfer case, trans (if you dont convert yours). Rember that you will have to have your rear driveshaft shortened as well! All you need to do is see how the axle is bolted up to the frame......NOW GIT!

Future plans: A draw through Twin(or big single) Turbo setup (to help with the upper end)
I did this swap on an 89 f-350 CC diesel. I bought a dana 60 axle from a 1990 truck. I then built front shackle mounts and added a set of rear spring mounts to the frame. The Dana 60 axles are expensive. A good axle hub to hub with the correct gear ratio to match your rear should be about $1300 from what I have seen. I replaced my auto e40d tranny with an older manual from a 4x4 so the tranfer case was not a problem.
I would try to find a dana 60 as they are a solid axle and were found under f-350 pickups. The dana 50 is the heavy duty 3/4 ton axle used in the late eighties and later 3/4 ton diesel trucks. the dana 50's before 97 are all a TTB setup like the 2wd i-beams. That is the reason I would us a dana 60. You would need an 86 or 87 up to 97 f-350 dana 60. ORU.com offers a shackle reversal kit that can be used to convert 2wd into 4x4.
