you can use any year model of pcm for an IDI , they didnt have the feature of the flashing o/d light until 92 and up , but all are interchangeable
gas and diesel are not interchangeble
you could have a problem with your KAM , keep alive memory
one wire to the pcm is always hot to maintain memory
if the fuse is blown or the wire is broken it will not store codes
drive the truck and check your engine rpm at say 50 mph while it is stuck in 3rd gear
then unplug the transmission connector on teh right side of teh trans
this will default to 4th gear drive it this way again to 50 mph and compare the rpm . if it has lower rpm disconnected then the problem is electronic
thanks did the tc check and that works this sounds weird but it acts like od. just isn't there first through third perfect tc unlocks and locks no lag time in reverse no codes .Did the test to make sure that the mpl switch is working and in spec. HELP PLEASE.
So the only thing that doesn't work is the OD? May be down to the solenoid pack and one isn't working. This is beyond what I know about these trans so far. Hopefully someone who knows more will chime in. I sent a note to Ford Trans Tech to see if he can help.
At this point what I did with mine when I had these problems was start running a series of tests with the truck running on blocks or jack stands. I also had a failure to engage overdrive and was able to track it down to a stuck 3-4 shift valve.
Perform these tests ONLY if you have a flat place to work on the truck and you are confident with performing the tests.
First, secure the truck by blocking the front wheels, then raise the rear wheels off the ground in jack stands.
Accelerate and observe each upshift as it happens. The TC lockup will be nearly undetectable since there is no load on the transmission to add any slip. Lockup will not happen with a cold transmission.
Make note of how fast the engine turns in each gear at a given speed of RPM=X and indicated MPH=Y (for example, RPM of 1500 and what the speedometer shows in each gear at that RPM).
Record the numbers.
Now unplug the PCM, and repeat the test but you will have to perform it a little differently.
Start off in "2" and record the speed and RPM.
Now shift into Drive and see what the speed and RPM are.
Make note of any differences from the previous test where the computer was connected. "2" should line up with 2nd gear and Drive should line up with 4th gear (overdrive)
Shut it down and let it sit for a while, then restart and go strait into Drive. make note of the speed/RPM.
Shut it down and let it sit overnight if possible. This is to rule out temperature as a contributing factor.
For the next test, leave the PCM disconnected. Again, go from park strait into Drive and see what happens (move the selector as quickly as you can). Make note of the speed/RPM.
thanks will start this now before I have to get back to work right now the truck is in Nevada and I'm working in colorado. Thanks again guys you have been really great.
