Well I sunk my swamp buggy a 93 explorer, Filled the tranny full of water due to the usual front seal being bad while it sat 2 days in 3' of mud and water.
The question I have is I have a C5 tranny from a 85/85 ranger 4x4. I know it will bolt on, but will it handle the 4.0L engine power? Again this is a woods/"swamped" buggy so the OD is not used at all. The drive shafts will be made to work with the application of the shorter C5.
The 93 has the A4LD currently in it. It had the puking front seal(torque converter hub wore out) problem. But I use it around and checked the fluid level quiet often(learned from my 89 BroncoII A4LD problems) After sitting 2 days while I tried getting my friends(who I pulled out many times before) to help pull it out(jerks never showed up), the water leaked passed the bad seal and filled the tranny up. I have yet to drop the pan to see how much water got in, but the dipstick was a strawberry milkshake...
I was planning on dropping it to replace the bushing and T/C. But after water got in, I don't want to do that, and had this C5 tranny sitting around.
The question again is: Will a C5 hold up to the 4.0L engine torque? I don't want to use it and blow it up for over torqueing the C5 tranny. But if not, then I'll take my chances with fixing the waterlogged A4LD thats in it right now.
Thanks JK080, for just a swamp buggy, top speed is under 30mph so I doubt the lockup T/C would even engage(if it is the origional t/c). Thoughfully I kept the C5 through 2 moves(lost the manual xfer case though) and now its going to be used.
