Piston Choices

Which pistons from TMI would be best for a stock 400 with stock heads.

This is the set up I will have when I get money in order.

4barrel Holley 600, Weiand 8104 intake
Comp cam of some sort, straight up timing chain, springs to match.
Stock bottom end with new bearings.
30 over bore.
Stock heads, maybe shaved some?

I would like to have forged pistons over hypertaunic. I want to be at least the 300hp range.

Forged are unnesesary on your application, i would use hyper 14cc step dish 0 decks, you can get his forged tops and machine them to 14cc also but that will be expensive.

My build is very similar to yours, except I'm gonna run the Edel 1406 and the Weiand 8010 not sure what the difference is there. I went with the comp XE262h, I bought the whole "k-kit". I also have a set of Headman long tube headers that will go on.

I just odered the hyper KB2347 pistons from tmi they are supposed to be 9.5-1 with the stock heads.

Also when I called he was out of the 30 over so I had him ship me a set of 40 over. If I'm not mistaken that will make my motor a 410cid. I'm hoping for over 300 hp. Also should be dead reliable on pump gas and last a while(at least I'm hoping so)

That is the intake I am going with to, I didnt notice I typed the number wrong until now.

The hypertaunic pistons you listed above with 14cc dish does he have those in stock or does he have to machine those as well? With light playing in the mud and light towing the hypers will be fine? Its not going to be hotrodded. Would it be worth having it blue printed and balanced? I want it to be reliable and have many years of trouble free service.

under 6000 rpms with a 4" stroke and no NOS or boost the hypers are good. you might have to see what your engine needs to be bored to my a machine shop before you order pistons and the 14cc is the say the pistons are made for TMI.

Is 60 over the max bore for the 400 block? I only wanna go 30 or 40 over. After I get the money and get it apart then I will see and decide what size I should go with. I have all the measurement tools I need to figure how much the cylinder is worn and to see if it is out of round or tapered. Or I might just take the pistons to the machine shop with the block and say do what you gotta do to make this fit in there, lol.

he doesnt make .060 pistons and i wouldn't go over .040 but i would try to get .030 to work if you can but .040 is a decent choice too. 4.060 bore on a 400 is just asking for trouble.

i'm sure someone will say they have been running one at 4.060 for 10 years this way, but its not a good idea.

I would take the block to your machinist and have them tell you how big you need to go overbore. My machine shop wanted to do a 30 over, but tmi is/was sold out of the 30 over pistons so I ordered the 40 over and told the machine shop to bore it accordingly.

Thanks for the information, I dont want to chance it either. I ran the number on my Bronco and it was ordered from the factory with the 400 option so I deffinetly don't want this blocked messed up since it originally started life as a 400 not a 351M.

Anybody know how many Broncos were ordered with the optional 400? As far as I can research there wasent many. Most people just later dropped the 400 crank and pistons in the 351M.

since 400 started in 71 and 351m in 75 i would say there were more 400 fabricated than 351m, anyways ive seen the other way around (many 400 destroked), the 400 im working with was originaly a 400 and i found it as a 351m....

anyways the hyper TIM piston comes already with the 14cc step dish...

And that's why I'm just rebuilding the 460 instead of finding a new engine in my black truck after the engine got trashed.
My Bronco and my truck both have the original engines. All my friends want me to throw a 460 in my truck to build for racing and a 460 in my Bronco to build for bogging. I want to keep them number matching incase I decide to do a frame off resto to both of them. Plus it means alot more to me because they still have the original engines.

If I find a rusted out 4wheel drive that aint good for nothin but muddin or abusing sure ill throw a 460 in it, I got one setting in the shop, lol. But the other two are keeping what they came with.

Someone said a 400 will make 80% of the torque of a 460 at half the RPM. Torque is where it is.

Very true, due to the longer stroke, theres lots of power coming out of these engines so why the swap?
