I kinda searched through the old threads a little but couldn't find what i needed. I will be performing an engine swap in my 79 f-150 which currently has a 351m and a t18 4 speed, with a 75 460. I want to purchase a new clutch but JBG seems a little expensive for there so called swap kit clutch. Can i just get a 12 inch flywheel and clutch for a 460 that will work with the T18 or do i need this special swap kit clutch, or will a clutch for a 351m work on the 460
The easiest way to do it is to use a 360 flywheel that uses a 10.5 clutch then buy a GOOD pressure plate and a GOOD clutch disc. A brass button disc is a good choice .This stuff will fit inside the bellhousing with no problems and will hold the power of a strong 460. The 12" stuff won't fit with out a lot of work.
i went through a bunch of crapto put a 460 with a manual tranny in my hotrod... but finally got what i wanted...I took the c6 off and put a small block top loader behind a 1969 460...heres what i used...1985 aluminum truck bell housing with stock release arm and hydraulic system(master and slave cyls). aftermarket steel flywheel 184 teeth with12 3/8 inch bolt spacing for pressure plate(this makes it a flywheel for a 360)11" clutch plate and pressure plate...390 pilot shaft bushing(no mods just press into outer larger bore in crank end)
i dont think the 12" will fit under the bell you have. the 351m and the 400 i think are same so i beleive an 11" will...get a high performance one for more pressure and grab. My 360 flywheel is 184 teeth and i think 15 1/2 inches across and it uses the 11' bolt pattern for pressure plate is 12/3/8 ctr to ctr
check the distance from the face of the bell where your tranny bolts up to the face of the pilot shaft bushing, on the 460 and on your origional engine..if it is the same distance then thats good.
