A friend of mine emailed me asking this hard to read/understand question that I dont have an answer to. Partly because of the way he asked I think
Anyway here it is, any help is appreciated....
need help from you ford BIG block guys....
At my shop I have a clusterf#@k is a 1979 F250 with a 1973ish 429 police interceptor in it..
The timming chain cover had a crack in it leaking coolant.....
The original cover the crank seal came in from the back, The new replacement cover the seal comes in from the front....ok no big deal...
BUT the balancer is not what slides through the seal/cover is this crank sleeve thing. then the balaner buts up to it with the balance bolt etc.
there is a grove from hell in this thing.....replace it, WRONG not available from ford...
ok..repair sleeve like a "normal balancer" , WRONG yes the do make it,
BUT here is where it gets fun..the seal is not in the same spot, we agree right??
ok the new seal is not riding on the new repair sleeve area....just misses it by a c^nt hair.
needless to say leeks oil like a sum b!tch
what do I do?????

Two I know of are Timken and Fel-Pro.
One has a rolled-in end that fits over the end of the balancer/spacer. It can only go in one position.
The other has a rolled-out flare and can be positioned anywhere along the sealing surface.
Apparently he got the fel-pro sleeve which wont butt up to the seal. Another concern to him is that the original 429 sleeve didn't have a counterweight where as the new one does (which is for a 460) According to his parts supplier, one can't be had without the counterweight???
Hey, I'm just a noob.
But I do know that up until '79 or so the BB's were internally balanced and had no 'porkchop' counter weight.
The ONLY reason I knew about the 2 sleeves was that I failed on my first.
I can see not having a new part available for something that's been OOP for 30 years.
Perhaps someone that knows more than me can weigh in with some advice.
I wish your friend luck, it sounds like a cool project.
total performance sells the sleeve for internal balanced BBF's. i was going to convert my 69 460 (basically a bigger 429) powersteering from under the timing cover to a belt driven version. i need this sleeve and the timing cover that doesnt have the pump inside it....you may need this sleeve also..
