Question fuel pump not connecting inside engine problem??

I just got my first 1953 F100 and it is a nice original truck.
1 thing not original is it has a 6 cylinder-maybe 223/300--not sure yet-how do you tell difference?
My problem is---truck turns over-but gets no gas.
Previous owner--bought new fuel pump and said that it sucks ok but when he installed it---it would not suck any gas.
He thinks the cam that pushes on the fuel pump is worn.
HOW DO I FIX THIS? I just got it today and cleaned it up--do not know much about it yet. Funny having a 53 with all these 56s LOL
thanks Bill

Could it be the wrong fuel pump and the arm is not positioned properly on the cam. If you can determine that it is a bad cam lobe it might be time for an electric pump.

I just bought this truck and hope to drive it soon. If electric pump is easiest fix --will do.
Wonder why the shaft that hits the fuel pump wore down? How do I tell if this is a 223 or a 300 or another 6 cyl.? Bill thanks

also---truck is a 53 f100 and is 6 volt positive ground. I hope I can handle this. I am no electrician-haha!! Battery is good and cranks ok. I am changing the fluids next and then will work on the fuel pump. Wonder how this truck stayed so nice being in Ohio all these years? It has some rust and 1-2 holes but nice for an Ohio effie....Bill

215/223's have the exhaust/intake on the drivers side while the 240/300's are on the passenger side. Also the 52 to 54's use a different fuel pump from the later models as the fuel pump boss is "upside down", maybe you have the wrong pump?

6v aren't hard to find, just $$$. A Carter is the only one I'd recommend, check Summit Racing or similar. They are excellent pumps. I'd keep it stock if you can.

MMB-THANKS--it is a 223 6 cylinder. The p.o. has about 4 fuel pumps in bed.--I have to go to hospital today for tests-so no time today, but tomorrow will look at fuel pumps and see if they are wrong. VERY GOOD DEDUCTION--they might be for another yr.--since this engine was a replacement-might be another yr.
I hope I do not sound stupid--but the 6 volt pos. ground is scaring me--LOL Bill

I've seen the 6v fuel pumps on Ebay a few times recently. Keep an eye out.

I would take the existing pump off and check out the wear patten on the arm. Does it make the "sucky" sound when you pump it up and down? You may well have the wrong pump. Look on Ebay. There are pix of the different models. V8, straight 6, Edsel; they all look the same and will bolt up. The only decernable difference is the shape/length of the arm. Good luck, Jag

6V +grnd is no big deal as long as you are not trying to add modern accessories. The electrons don't particularly care which direction they travel. It is also pretty easy to convert it to 12V -grnd. There is a lot of info aound here on how to do the conversion. Place a wooden dowel straight in against the fuel pump cam and turn the engine over. If the dowel moves in and out, the problem is the wrong pump. I've never run across a worn out cam, the fuel pump doesn't exert that much pressure. Maybe numberdummy can provide info on how to distinguish what year and model engine you have and the proper fuel pump for the same.

You might have the right fuel pump but have it mounted upside down. Like Jag said, alot of these old pumps look alike, and some will even cross over. I once used a fuel pump from a John Deere tractor on my 49 Pontiac straight 8.

You should be able to measure from the mounting surface to the cam lobe (or as in the case of the old Pontiac straight 8....the crank lobe) to get an idea of the pump you have it close to being right. Typically when you go to mount the pump it won't want to sit flush against the block, and you will have to compress the arm a little bit. If thats not happening then there is a problem.

Good luck
Bobby

WOW, this is my 6000th post....I sure do spout off alot

you can also remove the pump and look through the hole in the block to see if you can see the lobe on the camshaft, might have to turn the engine while looking

Thanks guys and will look at it in morning---Bobby--wow---6000 posts and it was to me--awesome!! Thanks
Ax--thanks--I am real uneducated on electric current and how it is used--(always had electrician at shop) and so never had to wire much.
I cannot wait to drive this 53---feels like I am 16 again.....and the other 53 is coming Friday--and it has spotlight/stainles trim/original speaker/and all the original bed wood too. It is rustier than the one I have now--but for 500 bucks--the seat is also like new. I will hopefully get the 223 to drink some 3.60 gas soon--haha!! It probably will spit this expensive gas up---LOL Bill

1952/54 215/223 fuel pumps

Parts catalog shows that two different pumps were used on 1952/54 215/223's (car/truck same-o same-o).

B4A9350B .. Fuel Pump (replaced EAA-9350-E)

No obsolete parts seller shows any of these.

B4A9350C .. Fuel & Vacuum Pump (replaced EAA-9350-F)

McDonalds Obsolete Parts in Rockport IN has 11 = 812-359-4965

Green Sales has 1 = 800-543-4959

Miller Obsolete Parts in Binghamton NY has 6 = 800-546-7278

Wesley Obsolete Parts in Liberty KY has 1 = 606-787-5293

Dennis Carpenter's NOS parts website shows 6 = 704-786-8139

Thanks guys....N.D.--You must dream part numbers-LOL I will call some of these numbers soon as I figure out the problem. I installed a fuel pump upside down on my case tractor and it took 2 weeks to figure out the problem--so goes to show my deduction powers are not too good--haha!! Bill
