Fuel filter question

Do spin-on diesel fuel filters commonly have the same threads as oil filters, i.e. 3/4"-16 like a Fram PH8A?

Noticed a guy on ebay selling remote diesel filter mounts, but they're really just remote oil filter mounts. Was thinking that if I go to an electric pump, I wouldn't mind making my own remote filter mount in that manner.

Don't know for sure - but then you wouldn't have the water trap in the bottom of filter and the sensor to tell you have water in filter - if you went with an oil filter.

Actually after the water in fuel fiasco on my way to work this morning (antifreeze in the WMO) I'm thinking of hitting the junkyard for a complete filter head and filter from a 7.3 truck and installing that one in my truck inline with the stock setup, or I can just use the stock fuel-water separator that came in my buddy's 6.9 truck...

I'm not talking about using an oil filter...I'm talking about using a spin-on fuel filter.

And, if I went that route I'd probably install it in tandem with the factory filter.

Just hit a salvage yard on get a 6.9 filter header, then you can mount it anywhere you want and still use stock fuel filters.

no fuel filter threads are different than oil filters, and they also have by-pass valves that you do not want that in fuel system. they have different nominal micron ratings

7.3 fuel filter 11 microns
6.9 fuel filter 6 microns

most oil filters 19-25 microns

(fram filters are junk)

best thing to do is go to your local Wix dealer get in there wix book get a correct fuel filter base with a correct fuel filter.
you could save your self alot of money in the long run

I kinda like the sound of 6 micron filter, instead of the 11 microns I should have now. So here's tonight's dumb question - will a 6.9 filter fit in a 7.3 filter housing, and the other way around? Cause I'd like to get a 6.9 filter head and stuff and put the 11-micron filter in it and run that on the framerail, then have the 6-micron filter up in the filter head on the engine... Possible?

Well, I wouldn't mind getting one of the other filters I've seen because a lot of them go down to 2 microns. Eh, I'll look into it. Might go with one of them and a water separator along with it.

6.9 and 7.3 filter threads and sizes are completely different. I would recommend getting a filter housing from a big truck place, get one that is made for an FF105 filter. That housing has a million different filters that fit on it, long, short and all different microns.

In the back of the Wix book there are key way style fuel filters and bases made by stanadyne. all of these filters are water sep. 150-2 micron ranges, and many cool add-ons like primer buttons, fuel heaters,

and the really cool thing is since the original water sep. was made by stanadye so these bases mount up to the original location.

6.9 original base use much longer bolts than the 7.3 good to know when your looking though a junk yard.

6.9 thread 7/8-14
7.3 thread 1-14
