Can someone tell me if the 302 uses the same dipstick as the 351W?
I changed the oil in my F250 (351W) when I bought it a few months ago but it took nearly 7.5 litres of oil to bring it up to FULL on the stick (including the new filter).
It's definitely a Ford dipstick, but maybe not the correct one?
The truck originally had a 302.
Does 6 quarts (as per manuals) fill everyone elses 351W sump & filters OK?
There are several different dipsticks for these engines over the years, depending on vehicle application and redesign or relocation of dipstick. Some 302 engines will use the same dipstick as some 351Ws.
For example, if the 302 and 351W are from the same year and type vehicle, they are pretty certain to interchange, but a dipstick from a 1983 Crown Vic with a 302 compared to a 1992 F150 with a 351W, not so certain.
I understand the engine was originally from a car & presumably had a truck pan fitted, but I haven't been able to determine whether it is a standard capacity pan , but through the 80 - 86 forum, NumberDummy said he didn't think that a factory high-capacity pan existed.
If it's standard, I can replace or remark the dipstick using 6 quarts as the guide to the level.
The pan no. is 92TY 6675 AA if anyone is able to help.
Well I went to check the engines I have, the car 1969 351W (front sump) has a C9OE-B dipstick mounted in the timing cover that is 22" long tip to bottom of ferrule, or 20" from the middle of the oil level marks to bottom of ferrule.
My 1985 car 351W (front sump) is side or oil pan mounted, and curses- the dipstick is missing! I think my three year old son might have something to do with this. Anyhow, I don't think the style of pan should matter to the dipstick level mark, as wouldn't all these engines be designed to have the oil level at the same height below the crankshaft?
But in your most recent post it would appear that you have a 1992 oil pan. I'll go measure my 1994 351W truck engine's oil dipstick and post it soon.
Okay, I checked the 1994 motor, and the dipstick has a marking of F2TE-6750-DA. It's about 29-1/4" long, tip to bottom of ferrule, or 28" from the middle of the oil level marks to bottom of ferrule. It also has a spread of only about 1/4" between the add/full marks.
The tube is, unfortunately, sharply curved and goes between the exhaust manifold and the head so is too awkward for me to measure. However, the distance from the top of the dipstick tube to the top of the bracket which holds it to an exhaust manifold stud is 5-1/4". Is yours similar?
So if you have the same dipstick tube as I do on the '94 motor, you need that F2TE-DA dipstick or equivalent. If not, then I guess you maybe need something else.
