I am trying to get the steering column out of my 1969 N600. Just below the u joint connection is a bolt which goes through the knuckle and the rod going down to the steering box. Is this where I should be able to take it apart? I pulled the bolt out because it looks to go through the rod, but it wont budge. Should I heat it with my torch and then rap on it? I would post pics but my phone doesn't send the pictures in the right form to down load on here.
I gave you guys a break, now I am back at it my goal to finish this truck is Feb 14 my dads birtheday. May he rest in peace.
Yes--your Dad was an alright guy. I am glad I had chance to meet him and he did a great job painting and wrenching on your wrecker. RIP!!
I think you need to ask freighttrain on the the site--he is alot of help and helped me on my 71.
When are you going to come up? I would like you to see my hot-rod barn with all my trucks, minus 3.....they are in Florida. Hope you get that column out--use a BFH and that always does the trick-LOL Bill
In the secnd pic, I would pull the lock bolt out, use penetrating oil and heat if necessary.
Then put a dull cold chisel in the space between the two ears to pry apart. Should slip or be able to be knocked off the shaft. You may need to unmount the box to get enough clearance.
PS good to see you back!
As AX already mentioned, you should be able to drive a chisel (or one of those flat bladed "specialty" chisels with the nice plastic handles and the instructions about never using this tool as a chisel...LOL) into the gap of the ears to spread them out a bit. the penetrating oil is always a good idea. Make sure you smack your thumb with the hammer and drag your knuckles across something that will surely take the skin off (without a proper sacrifice to the truck gods it will never come off)
Good luck, its going to be fun watching your progress on this project
