You didn't say what you are looking for. More height, looks, traction, etc. What size motor, gear ratio? You can put a bigger tire on but what type of tire do you want? Sounds like you just want to look aggressive. In that case whatever the tire guy can sqeeze in there.
I run the stock size.

LAST EDITED ON 21-Dec-00 AT 07:02 AM (EST)[p]Sorry let me clarify. Looking for a little more aggresiveness. Just don't want the tires to rub. My 96 had 33-12.50-15's with a 3 inch lift and 15x10 centerline hellcats. I liked the stance but not really interested in liftinjg right now. Cash is a main factor and those lifts for this new truck are ariund 1400 bucks from what i've seen. Just wondering if anyone has put 285/75's or 85's on or bigger and had no problems or selective trimming to make them work and look good. pic's welcomed.
Its a 97 extended cab with an auto and 4.6 and 3.55 gears.

You also have to remember that a bigger tire will reduce your gear ratio. For instance, if you have 31 inch tires stock and go to 35 inch tires, because of the 4 inch difference the gear ratio will be reduced to a 3:15 ratio(roughly). You also have to take that into consideration. That is just an example, but also must be looked at. Hope this helps.

97F150bl,
I am running BFG MTs LT 285/75 R16s on the stock 16 inch rim. It is 7 inches wide. No rubbing what so ever. I use the truck off road so all extreeme angles have been tested.

Thanks man! i was wondering what would fit. Did this kill your gas mileage alot and did it make the truck lose alot of acceleration? I know it will lose some but is it really noticeable? My 96 was pretty noticable in mileage but not acceleration.

If you want pictures, go to http://www.f-150online.com and check out the owner's gallery. I think there are something like 400 pictures of stock and modified late model F-150s. As far as tire size most people seem to like the 285/75R16s and as far as I know you can put those on your stock 16x7" wheels. Hope this helps.

Milage remaided about the same but the truck is a dog now.
I estimate I lost about ¾ second in the quarter mile. I went from 255/70 16s to the 285s and that is quite a jump in diameter. I am looking into getting 4.10 or 4.30 gears to bring back the lost accelleration.

LAST EDITED ON 11-Jan-01 AT 08:10 AM (EST)[p]I'm running 305/70/16's(32.8" X 12") on my truck with no lift and no modifications to the bumper. They are the same height as the 285's but it is .8 inches wider. It is sluggish just like Jean Marc described but I love the way they look. You mentioned that a lift was too expensive. Have you considered a body lift? A 3" body lift costs about $120-$150, from what I have read, they are not hard to install, just time consuming. I plan to install a 3" body lift on my truck within the next couple of weeks, when ever it comes in. With a 3" body lift you can fit 35's under these beasts. If you want to see pics of my truck with the 285/75/16's, you can go to http://97f1504x4.freeservers.com the pic on the initial page is with the 285's along with most of the pics, some of the pics are with 265's. They handle great off road too.
