I am wondering how loud my system really is... I am wanting a number to start from and improve on... For some reason i think i heard there is a small unit you can set up in your vehicle, like on the dash, and it will record the db levels, and record your peak...
Is this true or was it some strange dream i had?
If it is true. where could i get one, i dont want one of the big fancy units just something small and portable, doesnt have to be dead accurate, but pretty close...
Where could i get one, and if there too expensive and suggestions on where to go so i can find what kind of db's im pushing
I've seen one at a SPL contest used by one of the teams. It used cat5 wire to connect the module to a PC. All I can recall was it had a blue label with some lightning bolts on it.

ok, audio is my sweet spot. so,
you could either go to Walmart or radio shack and pick up one of those cheap DB meters. they are not accurate and they only go up to like 130ish DB's, or you can find a car audio shop around you that has a Term Lab (very good DB meter). they might charge you to use it, but its only like $10-$15 depending on your store really. they will give you like 10-15 minutes to test out youre system and see what youre best score is.
and without you telling us what you have audio wise, there is no way we can help you figure out a good starting point.
maybe a little further detail??
i would say go to a audio shop that has a Term Lab, or a AC meter "audio control meter". i would preferr a Term Lab meter, but a AC meter is not that far off... in my experience with playing with one of them walmart, radio shack meters, they are garbage unless you dont care what you are REALLY hitting.
Hey truckin...you know this thread is dangerously close to what a mall crawler would ask...hahahaha.
Yea i know, but does a rebel flag painted on the box count for anything?
Sorry man, i love my music, i love it loud!

sorry for the kinda long post. hope this helps.
Ive got 2 12" subs, dont know the brand, but there a cheap brand, and ive got 1 memphis 15" sub, in ported box, with 500Wrms.
Im fairly sure the box is to big for the subs... it was kinda a quick build to get some tunes into the truck, before i made my road trip...
I doubt i will build a different box for it, as i want to upgrade soon.
The upgrades will be posted as they happen... I will say im shooting for around 150db... With lots of cone area!
There's only a few good accurate meters out there. Term lab Audio control Kriss, and the B&K. There is a dash mounted unit called the epicenter 150 or 160. Run fast from the radio shack units.
truckin, i dont mean to sound derogitory but,i seriously doubt that you are gonna be in the 150ish db range. but, you might benefit because you have a pickup. i know in my excursion, i am running 2 kenwood x1r's (1 to each sub) to 2 jl 13w6's @2ohms in a custom built slot ported box. i have a ton of dynamat but i loose a ton of sound out of my rear 1/4 windows. i run consistantly at 157.6 db.... if i could find someway to seal up the 1/4 windows, i would definately see the mid 165 db range. total wattage to each sub is about 1100 watts. more to come too.lol.
thats true but dont under estimate it. it may be putting it in the low 130's. it going from the 14 0to 150 that the hard part. then from the 150 to 160 is really hard. multiple amps, lots of current, great subs and box, well insulated vehilce.
Little insight, Actually Term-Lab started With DBdra, and was started by Wayne Harris, as an different DB challenge to IASCA's IDBL. The fact that Wayne has promoted and pushed the Term-lab Format into about every sanctioned event doesn't and that it's computer based doesn't make it the end all be all of SPL measurment systems. It is a good system, and works. I guess I what I am trying to say is Term-pro is the Microsoft of the DB arena and I guess everything else is more Mac, Lunix and what not.
Personally before DBdra, the leading tool was the AC SA-3050, then 3051 and the 3055. Which I have a SA-3055, which I bought off of ebay for $750 and got the 180db mic.
I wouldn't say the TL is the end all for meters but it is a standard to judge by. it's nice to know that no matter where in the world the meter is that it is consistent with all the others out there.
I've seen big differences in others with elevation and humidity.
